Guest guest
Ya, that seems really low. Since folic acid is not a drug (over the counter, I actually buy it in vitamin form b/c it's cheaper than getting a prescription!) and it's actually good for you, I aer on the side of caution and take more than not enough. I've read studies of people who have not taken enough folic acid when on mtx. and it can be bad (not to scare you at all, just an FYI) So, you should call your doctor, you should really be taking atleast 1mg a day, not sure if cramming it all into one day is as good, but who am I to say, I'm not a doctor (as of yet ) take care Kate! Guest guest
Kate...hon, Try it, and see what it does. I take the MTX once a week like I said, but..I take Folic Acid once a day..*but*...it is *one* mg. So if your doc prescribed a 5 mg. Folic Acid once a week, that must be what he feels is best. Wait and see how you feel after the MTX. If you feel okay, or if you are so sick you can't cope...that will tell the story if you need to talk to your doc about adjusting doses of either or both the MTX and the Folic Acid. Hope this works for you sweetie!! Hugs, tricia -- methotrexate > >Well, my prediction was right, my rheumy has started me on MTX as of this >weekend coming. Guest guest
Hi Kate, this is . I started mtx when I was your age and took it for 8 years. It did control the still's but not as well as enbrel has. I did not have too many side effects with mtx. Mainly just diahrreah every week about 36 hrs after my dose, occasioanl nasuea, some hair loss and mouth ulcers. Nothing bad. But there is something important I want you to talk to your doc about and that is fertility. Methotrexate can damage your eggs resulting in sterility. For 8 yrs I avoided pregnancy because you cannot become pregnant on mtx at all. Well now my doctor thinks all the mtx that I took damaged my eggs for good and that is what is causing my fertility probles. Soe young women are offered the chance to rem=move some eggs before they begin the mtx in case theyt want to have children and cant after the therapy. Most of these women however take mtx for cancer and at much hhigher doses than we do. My docs are doing more testing to find out for sure what is going on with me but I wanted you to know about this and discuss it with your doctor. There are other great meds out now that dont hae all the side effects that mtx does., Enbrel is nt available but Remicade and Anakinra is. sorry for the typos Im using my mons webtv and I cant see half the screen take care jenn > Well, my prediction was right, my rheumy has started me on MTX as of this > weekend coming. Guest guest
If you take MTX in the evening, make sure you drink lots of liquids before and after. If you take it during the day, you usually take in enough liquids, but not so at night. I read a few years ago that it better to take it in the AM because of fluid requirements and the liver. Methotrexate Hi Kate and all - - I have found that taking Folic Acid daily is a great help in preventing the side effects of Methotrexate. I started with 1 mg. per day of Folic Acid and 7.5 mg. per wek of MTX. I am now at 17.5 mg. of MTX weekly and 3 mg. per day of Folic Acid. Also, taking the MTX in the evening with the evening meal has been helpful. Tricia gave me these tips when I started on MTX back in June of 2001. Good luck. Ask all the questions you can think of. Guest guest
I take the MTX injections twice a week. I have noticed benefits. I have not experienced any negative side effects. Guest guest
I take 1 mg of Folic Acid a day, 10 mg of Prednisone per day, and inject 7.5 mg of Methotrexate on Monday am's, 5 mg Methotrexate on Thursday am's. So, the is 7 mg of Folic acid a week, and 12.5 mg of Methotrexate a week. My research has said " Taking large amounts of Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9) may reduce the effectiveness of Methotrexate. " My doctor originally had me on 14 mg of Folic acid (2 mg per day- 1 am and 1 pm) but the dose was too much for me. It made me foggy headed. I don't know how much would be considered a large amount, but your doctor or pharmacist should know. Caroline Kate wrote: Thanks all for the replies. Tricia - yes my rheumy gave me folic acid pills, but unlike most people's posts ive read who take it daily, i have to take one pill a week, half way through the week after taking the MTX. Does anyone else do this? So if i take the MTX on a saturday, i take the folic acid on wednesday. The MTX pills are 10mg a week, and the folic acid pills are 5mg a week. Does this seem a low dose of the folic acid in comparison to the amount of MTX? Guest guest
When I was first started on MTX, I got a 40 mg shot/week for a couple of weeks, and then the dosages were slowly dropped. I questioned it because it was backwards according to all the others here that started on MTX. It worked great for me that way though. I think they call it a " loading dose. " It gets your blood levels of the MTX up faster and therefore, reduces symptoms sooner. I never had any bad reactions to MTX. In fact, when I flare my hair starts to fall out, but if I started back on MTX, my hair stopped falling out! Oh well...my docs have all told me I'm the exception to the rule! I have a lot of liver damage now (they don't know why yet) and can't take MTX ever again. I'm really sad about that because that really helped a lot (along with taking prednisone). If you're worried about the higher dose, just ask your doc. However, I'm fairly sure that the treatment you're getting is just to get you relief as fast as possible. The high dosage that gets tapered doesn't cause any more problems. It's only if you were to stay on that high a dose over a longer period of time, that I'd be concerned. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Dear Kate, I have had a lot of cortisone injections. In the past they worked pretty well. It helped with the pain, stiffness and inflammation of the joint that was injected. I remember these injections helping these joints for about 6-8 weeks. The last few I had barely lasted for 2 weeks. I am pretty sure the injections will help you and probably last longer for you. These injections can really help. I know that you can only safely have so many a year. I am glad your Doc is trying to make you feel better especially during your exam time. Mtx seems like one of the most popular meds for people with our disease and similar diseases. It seems that it has helped a lot of people. I hope your one of them. I will be praying the added meds will help you feel better. I know you will do well during exam time. Keep us posted. Love, jatw@...
Guest guest
Dear Jen, I am very curious as to what you find out about Mtx and infertility. I was on the oral dose for a long time shortly after my onset. I was on it for almost as long as you. I remember my Doc's being very leery of the med. This was many years a go when they believed it wasn't that safe of a med. Plus I never was on Folic acid or anything else with it to combat the side effects. I remember feeling so sick while on it. I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am about your news. I wish I could do something to ease your pain. Know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, jatw@...
