Hi Heidi

I am from Canada and my doctor is doing 100% mehta casting on my son Peyton. He is located at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. If you would like to give her my email address lynnandandy@... that is ok.

Someone posted under my Breezy Mama essay, a question about Mehta doctors in Canada- I know Darrell travels to SLC, and no longer posts, here. Forgive me for not remembering everyone's location, who is getting proper early Mehta treatment in Canada? Thanks! Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

Thank you so much, Lynn and ! The mother posted on the Breezy Mama site comments section, so I don't know if she'll follow my advice to join our group- hopefully she will. Maybe I can get her email from the Moms who run the site...I'll email one of them privately. Oh, sorry Heidi I missed the first post for some reason.

I'm from Canada too. I'm in Ottawa and my doctor is following Mehta recommendations but I don't think he has the right table. Everything else he is doing, and actually following the advice from the Dr in Toronto (not the same one that Lynn is going to, but from the same team). I'm happy to help too, but depending of where they live, I would go with Toronto. Feel free to tell them to contact me if they wish.

To all new members: An important tip.

The correct 3-dimensional (elongation, derotation, flexion) pediatric sized

casting frame is best, for achieving correction on rapidly growing infants. A

frame that does not have the ability to hold/correct lumbar lordosis is not 3

dimensional correction. I am sure they are doing the best they can with a

Risser frame, but the correct frame is essential for it to be the Mehta Method.

The appropriate cut outs are KEY for this method, as well. A widely trimmed,

mushroom shaped window in front and a cut out on the concavity side in back to

properly address rotation (not past the midline). Please look at the photo in

Mehtas article.

Correct frame info is on the Resource Page of www.infantilescoliosis.org. If

the surgeons have any questions, they can contact ISOP direct.

Sincerely,

HRH

Once again, this concerns me and i will address this with my doc but our tummy cutout is definately NOT mushroom shaped or widely cut and there is no cut out in the back. I know they were Mehta trained in Oct 2008. I hope they have the correct table. I just assumed since they were Mehta trained they had the correct table they were doing it the correct way but my sons cast does not look like described. I sent a pic of Isaiah in his cast to and she didnt comment that it looked wrong, but it sounds wrong. Anyone else have this experience? Other than Dianna who has the same Dr as we do??....concerned!!

They did for the training session (they borrowed ISOP's), so Im sure they do, as

they understand the importance/necessity of appropriate equipment. I would get

verbal confirmation of this. Ask to take a photo of it and Ill let you know.

I have an idea........although you may not want to see what happens in the OR, have him take pictures during the casting procedure. We did with . Not so I could see the table, but because I wanted to see what he was going through. You can clearly see the table in one of the pictures. Just a thought. To all new members: An important tip.The correct 3-dimensional (elongation, derotation, flexion) pediatric sized casting frame is best, for achieving correction on rapidly growing infants. A frame that does not have the ability to hold/correct lumbar lordosis is not 3 dimensional correction. I am sure they are doing the best they can with a Risser frame, but the correct frame is essential for it to be the Mehta Method. The appropriate cut outs are KEY for this method, as well. A widely trimmed, mushroom shaped window in front and a cut out on the concavity side in back to properly address rotation (not past the midline). Please look at the photo in Mehtas article. Correct frame info is on the Resource Page of www.infantilescolio sis.org. If the surgeons have any questions, they can contact ISOP direct.Sincerely,HRH > > > >From: NIck Guthe <nickgutheyahoo (DOT) com>> >Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Canada?> >To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. com> >Received: Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 2:03 PM> >> >> > > >Someone posted under my Breezy Mama essay, a

We go to Rochester and my husband goes back into the OR every time. He rocks

Cole in there until he falls asleep with the anesthesia so he isn't scared.

They should let you go back there if you request, since they are not doing

actual surgery and there is no risk of infection.

Joan, Tasha, and everyone,

I spoke to Dianna as we have the same doc and we both find we have the same concerns. Since we dont get to see the doc before casting we are going to call and email his nurse and address our concerns and fwd Dr Mehta's article to her for review. I dont know if this will help but its a start. Joan, you have the mushroom shape cutout and side cutout right, i thought you did so i dont know why 2 docs in the same hospital would do it so differently. We will let you know what happens!
