Hehe sorry to butt in but I was a paramedic in northern California also ,lol I worked in San Joaquin county from Stockton to San Fransisco back in the 80's

Re: EMT

Sorry Jax, but this is where it breaks down. I was an EMT in CA. I'm a native Oregonian, but spent some years in SF, Santa , and Petaluma. I worked as an EMT while in SF in the Army. Army trained as a field medic, then I went to Golden Gate University for EMT I, II, and III. After I moved from SF, I never used these license or skills again. Jackie on wrote:

Good question . I don't know. I had two ultrasounds at the VA hospital in Portland OR before they said I should have a biopsy. The biopsy confirmed what the ultrasounds had shown. I think it is pretty common practice to use ultrasound for this purpose as it is less invasive than the biopsy.

I was 18 19 20 years old when I did this work. Gunshot victims, all kind of horors, but the worst was the bridge jumpers. The Presidio of SF Army base gave local rescue teams assistance in the surrounding areas. The Golden Gate enters SF an on the Army base, and our hospital is the closest to the bridge, so we did all those runs. At the time I was young, dumb, and had little love for myself or my fellow man, so seeing the blood and guts didn't bother me. By the time I was 22 or so, I knew I could not take seeing the pain and suffering everyday anymore. I found other work and haven't looked back. Kudo's to those who can take that kind of stress! Where would we be without you? My breaking point came when my Hemoglobin droped to 8.something while on duty and having to take procrit shots while on duty and not getting any relief,, being so tired and having to run a call where in "my mind" I would have done something and everyone else would have done something else,, I realized then that my critical thinking was not appropriate and so I went on medical leave and havent been able to return since.. so thats why Im taking my classes to help with "preventative health",, elizabethnv1 wrote: My breaking point came in my 8th year at work when we had a house fire , with a 2yr old fatality . I can still see it... the one that broke me... 14 or 15 year old girl... probably an unwanted pregnancy... jumped, and the impact split her wide open... two DOAs, and one EMT in tears. I could never do that work today. that was awful!!! I was so lucky that I was never overwhelmed and things came along as I could tolerate them and not feel that I needed to "run away" from it. had 3 dead children within a 3 week period, that was the closest I came to wanting to quit. I never did want to quit but knew I had to when my anemia was so bad that I couldnt make good critical decisions.. and couldnt jump out of bed and get moving quickly.. I MISS IT!Hunter wrote: I can still see it... the one that broke me... 14 or 15 year old girl... probably an unwanted pregnancy... jumped, and the impact split her wide open... two DOAs, and one EMT in tears. I know it is much easier that a biopsy, and that over three years I have seen a reduction in the size of some spots that show up in the ultrasound, and that this last one looked clearer than any I'd had before. From this I assume things are getting better. My doctor says they are, and doesn't see a need to confirm it with a biopsy, so... I had two ultrasounds at the VA hospital in Portland OR before they said I should have a biopsy. The biopsy confirmed what the ultrasounds had shown. I think it is pretty common practice to use ultrasound for this purpose as it is less invasive than the biopsy. One question though, and I'm just trying to understand, not to minimise what you're saying. Is ultrasound a good test for showing cirrhosis?
