Guest guest
Do not let the county use only this criteria for your child. They are using this one in particular to disqualify most of the students! They need to look at: age of your child, the nature of the disability of autism, critical point of instruction! -----Original Message-----From: Tina A Seward Sent: Friday, May 07, 2004 11:45 AMTo: autism-georgia Subject: Summer plansMy 5-year-old son had his IEP evaluation today. Guest guest
Wooo- they can not base his need for ESY on regression- or in your case, congratulations, lack there of... Your child has autism- I am assuming- READ Chapter 16 of Educating Children with Autism- written by the NIH for DOE. This has helped our county understand the need for year round services for children with Autism/PDD. If your child is on the verge of mastery of a goal- or if there is a chance he would regress during the summer without services- ESY is in order- Now what your son's ESY program looks like is up to you and your " child's IEP Team " - if he needs a very social program look at something like the YMCA or summer camps- if your child needs support with academics then that is what needs to be provided- either way this needs to be provided by the school system... Call another IEP ASAP. I have to say if your son is going into Kindergarten next year - he needs ESY- Kindergarten is intense... Best of luck Contact me if I can help Grabe Summer plans My 5-year-old son had his IEP evaluation today. He did not qualify for extended school year because he did not regress over the winter break. Guest guest
> I have to say if your son is going into Kindergarten next > year - he needs ESY- Kindergarten is intense... It sure seems like they did a lot more work than when I was in Kindergarten. I was surprised by all the work Bren had, especially all the handwriting. I think the hardest work we did when I was in kindergarten (granted that was more than a couple weeks ago) was hatching some chicken eggs in an incubator, and milking Rosebud the cow at a local dairy farm. Guest guest
--I'd like to know if I can email you off-line or call you concerning ESY. It sounds like you know about that program and I'm meeting with the school counselors in a couple weeks and I'd like to check on ESY for my son. I really don't know anything about it (did they have that when we went to school?). I did ask a couple weeks ago about " summer school " but they said pre-k wasn't given any funds for summer school so there wouldn't be anything. We were actually approached by the pre-k coordinator to consider applying to have repeat pre-k (which we'd already considered). Seems to me, if he would be approved to repeat pre-k he would definately be in need of ESY?? Please let me know if I can email off-line.
