Hey Theresa,

Sounds like you did good!! You should have also reminded that spec.ed. person that special education is not a "place", but a service. I have several high functioning AS or NVLD clients, and when I (or they) are told they cannot attend the regular gifted classes, I remind them of what you did, LRE, and I threaten them with private placement at public expense. If they cannot meet the needs of our children, then the school system can pay for a private school that we will find where those needs can and will be met. Often threatening them with private placement at public expense will get them on their toes as well.

Keep this in mind as the year progresses, and if he needs spec. ed. Inclusion support, than they MUST provide it. Does your high school not offer Team Taught classes?

If you continue to have difficulty with the lead spec. ed. teacher at the high school level, always cc: the County Special Ed. Director or Supervisor on correspondence. This also often helps tremendously, esp. when they tell you things that you know not to be entirely true. Maybe you can educate her and the district as well.

Hello

No they do not have team taught classes. Our county is not big on inclusion. was just at middle school that was a Project Wins school . They are the only school that is working with co-teaching. was on the Honors team, his special teacher would just check in with his gifted teachers too see if he was doing ok. His gifted teachers really loved so they would do whatever I asked them and then some. They went with me to the high school to explain to them how best to teach .They told the teachers that they would be glad to work with them if they had any questions. I think that my best bet will be is to try to avoid the special ed director at the school and just build positive relationship with his teachers. On a funny note had a wonderful Science teacher last year that is single( I am divorced) liked him so much that he tried to set us "up" but he has a girlfriend (to bad). said that he was prefect for me because he had a boat and was funny.Well thank you for your input!!!!! I know that with the right support he will do fine.

Be Blessed

Have you had the opportunity to meet all his teachers to this point? I agree that creating good relationships witht he teachers is important, as well as getting to know the principle. Does have a behavior plan? According to sLaw, this can be positive if for no other reason that to allow his a quiet place to collect his thoughts or have a contact if he were to become overwhelmed. Also, I was looking at some work by "?Carol Grey?" - she is the person who did a lot of work with Tony Atwood on social interaction skills for AS junior and senior high students.

By the way, said than you very kind during his x-ray.

Good luck.

Hi I am new to the group

My name is Theresa Kirkland I live in Moultrie. I have a 14 year old son with Aspergers ,NVLD and ADHD. Over the last three years he has done really well in middle school with the support of teachers that were willing to do what ever it took to take BRian to the next level. But we are now going to the high school and the special ed director there is not to "nice". She had told me that BRian would have to go to a special ed room for him to keep his IEP. BRian has been in gifted classes with special ed support at the middle school. From being in Partners and going to meetings I knew what she was telling me was against LRE. So I told her I wanted to see that school policy in writing she sent me a letter stating that it came from high up and there was no written policy. I explained to her that he would be seen on consultive staus only and would not go to a special ed room.Needless to say she is not happy with me.This special ed person is going to be hard to deal with but I will do what ever it takes to get BRian what he needs. This is going to be new to me because at the middle school thay would work with me. They just wanted to do what was best for him.It is my prayer that I can form good relationships with his teachers and bypass the special ed person all I can. One blessing is that his english teacher has a young daughter with AS so he asked to have BRian put in his room so that he could learn about AS thru me and be a teacher that BRian could trust.I really would like to know if any of you have a child with AS in high school and how is it going. I am really more worried about the social aspect the most.Be BlessedTheresa Kirkland
