Found an interesting article on the subject. Sulfites are found in synthroid!? Here are some excerpts and a link to the full article. I wonder if a sensitivity can occur the day after ingesting ... ? Gee, I'm going to check my other prescriptions ...

"Synthroid also contains sulfites. Many pharmacists do not even know this. I am allergic to sulfites and was on Synthroid since 1992 before I realized it contained sulfites in the dyes used. I contacted Synthroid directly. Levoxyl and Armour do not contain sulfites."Be sure to let your doctor know if you are sulfite sensitive and inquire if your medications contain sulfites. Call the manufacturer, if necessary.

Symptoms of the Sulfite-SensitiveDifficulty in breathing is the most common symptom reported by sulfite-sensitive people. Sulfites give off the gas sulfur dioxide, which can cause irritation in the lungs, and cause a severe asthma attack for those who suffer from asthma. Responses in the sulfite-sensitive person can vary. Sulfites can cause chest tightness, nausea, hives, or even anaphylactic shock. AvoidanceReading labels is the best way to avoid sulfites in foods. You may even want to contact the manufacturer. When eating out, be sure to check with the restaurant to make sure they do not use sulfites in preparing the food. Sulfites are often used in preparing potato dishes to keep them from discoloring. Since bottled lemon juice contains sodium bisulfite, make sure only fresh lemons are used in preparing your food.

Products That Contain SulfitesSulfites can occur naturally in foods or are added to enhance food products.

Sulfites are made naturally during the fermentation of wine. There is a variety of foods that contain sulfites. Some of them include baked goods, soup mixes, jams, canned vegetables, pickled foods, gravies, dried fruit, potato chips, trail mix, beer, wine, vegetable juices, bottled lemon juice, bottled lime juice, tea, condiments, molasses, fresh or frozen shrimp, guacamole, maraschino cherries, and dehydrated, pre-cut, or peeled potatoes.

Sulfites? and that's the thing about them that's bad. I honestly haven't investigated finding a wine that has no sufites. Wonder if there is one made.

RE: Soy, was RE: Re: Thyroid Meeting/San Area

What about the sulfides (sulfates?) present in most wines?

Peeled potatoes, as in raw fresh peeled potatoes? How can these have sulfites in them, when they haven't been processed yet? Could it be that I've found out my answer as to why I can't take Synthroid or Eltroxin (Eltroxin is supposed to actually be Synthroid, so the sales people say in another country)?

It was when I began taking Sulphamethoxizole-Trimethaprim (Bactrim or the other brand, can't remember which one), for what the doctor and I thought was an infection, that I started into the every-four-hour shakes, that prompted him to run the thyroid tests that day, and that's when I was diagnosed with thyroid disease. I frankly think that many things I was sensitive to helped the Hashi's out, being as I'm allergic to so many things, and probably a lot that I don't know about also. I had tremors and was nauseated, with that "sense of impending doom" feeling every few hrs, as in TSH stimulation, to no avail. As a matter of fact, I think that, for sensitive people, there are many of the most simple things, day to day, other people are not sensitive to, that are just like poison for those who are, all the way from foods, drugs, a little car exhaust, to smoke wafting in the window of the house (1998).

Re: Oh dear, Sulfites

You see, the sulfur compound is what I thought I was reacting to in the Levoxyl. Sulfa allergies run in my family. Every time I've taken a sulfa drug, I've ended up feeling more sick than the original illness that prompted taking a prescription.

My husband used to work for DOW chemical, years ago. He's the one who read the Levoxyl information and explained it to me. Waaaay down at the bottom, he found something about a bad interaction with sulfites.

Best wishes--

Courtenay.

I don't know what they mean by peeled potatoes. Maybe they are talking about potatoes in the can? Could be they add sulfites before they can them so they don't turn color. I don't know ... just a rough guess. What reaction did you have when you took synthroid? I take several different pills. Maybe one of them has sulfites and this is the reason that I keep getting shortness of breath?

Levoxyl contains croscarmellose which is a sulphur compound. I am not sure what kind of sulphur compound it is. It may be a sulfite or not." A. Weller" wrote:
