Maternal neuronal antibodies associated with autism and a language disorder.

Dalton P, Deacon R, Blamire A, Pike M, McKinlay I, Stein J, Styles P,

A.

Oxford, United Kingdom.

Neurodevelopmental disorders could be caused by maternal antibodies or other

serum factors. We detected serum antibodies binding to rodent Purkinje cells

and other neurons in a mother of three children: the first normal, the

second with autism, and the third with a severe specific language disorder.

We injected the serum (0.5-1.0 ml/day) into pregnant mice during gestation

and found altered exploration and motor coordination and changes in

cerebellar magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the mouse offspring, comparing

with offspring of mice injected with sera from mothers of healthy children.

This evidence supports a role for maternal antibodies in some forms of

neurodevelopmental disorder.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Purkinje cell

<neurology, pathology> A class of output neurons in the cerebellum, which

are the only neurons that convey signals away from the cerebellum. They form

a layer of large ganglion cells near the surface of the cerebellum.

neurons

Any of the conducting cells of the nervous system. A typical neuron consists

of a cell body, containing the nucleus and the surrounding cytoplasm

(perikaryon); several short radiating processes (dendrites); and one long

process (the axon), which terminates in twiglike branches (telodendrons) and

may have branches (collaterals) projecting along its course.

So the maternal antibodies are to the neurons? Sort of like the ANA titer

our kids can have? (Sorry if I'm completely dense here, LOL)

Another thing to look at in this " study " is... one woman. If I read

this abstract correctly, they tested *ONE* woman. What I would

like to see is them test more than *one* person and see if the same

holds true.- A.C.

What is the ana titer? Barb

Hi Barb,

Here's the medical description.

Cheryl

Antinuclear antibody is an antibody that react against components of the

cell nucleus such as DNA, RNA, histone or non-histone proteins.

These antibodies are present in a variety of immunologic or autoimmune

diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis,

scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis,

dermatomyositis and in persons taking hydralazine, procainamide or

isoniazid.

A serologic measurement for antinuclear antibodies can aid in the diagnosis

of unexplained arthritis, rashes or chest pains.

Acronym: ANA

Auto-Nuclear Antibodies titre. A measure of autoimmune antibodies produced

in the body.
