Guest guest
Hi Debbi, On the subject of autism and OCD - and this is just my very own viewpoint - autistic kids and OCD do seem to go together frequently. BUT autistic kids have obsessive/compulsive type tendenciesj; part of autism and " I " feel that's part of the autism, not OCD. " got " OCD in 6th grade. What I call " plain old OCD. " He had the " fear of something bad happening to him " with his OCD. Now - in 8th grade I got his diagnosis of Aspergers/HFA. They said I would have to stop thinking of him as having " OCD " as OCD is part of autism. (perhaps not a full quote, but to think of OCD as *part* of his autism is) I told them that I will agree that he might have some obsessive/compulsive type autistic behaviors (great interest in playing video games, likes his " routines " ...) but that THEY had to realize that some of his problems were " OCD " and not related to his Aspergers - (the anxiety feeling of " something bad will happen " if he didn't comply) AND that his " OCD " needed to be treated as OCD and not autism. Reason for stating THAT to them is that a lot of times with autism, some " programs/supports " work WITH/around/accommodate the rituals/obsessions and don't try to " fight " it as we do with trying to get past OCD (like your son's hoarding, etc, and the distress for him that went with it). So, for ME, has OCD; and he has/is Aspergers. Got to get to work (and no time to proofread!) but wanted to toss my thoughts your way if this comes up afterwards and your ds meets the autistic criteria. I think all experts will differ on the topic but I totally disagreed in our OWN situation with what the " experts " thought/said on the OCD/autism subject for *our* situation when they had not lived through all the OCD, as was past the worst times and OCD was in the background more by the time they saw him. I totally confused you, I'm sure, sorry! Just a sore point with me for our experience. I KNEW had autistic traits and felt he was Aspergers from his early years. But the OCD was, for , separate from the AS. Just my own thoughts and nothing " expert " about me! , 16, OCD, dysgraphia and HFA/Aspergers, and gifted I'm getting > told by all these Dr's that he " is " autistic (High Functioning Autism - HFA). > I'm just a little upset that they didn't tell me this when he was 3. Maybe we > would have seen these obsessions coming (they tell me ocd can be a part of > autism). And maybe my son could have had help with his social skills, of which he > has none. We always thought he didn't fit in because he was gifted, but when > he attended the gate magnet school for gifted kids, and was the
