Guest guest
Thanks so much to everyone for all the input ! I know she drinks lots and lots of water, so much so that she says she is going to the bathroom at least every hour. She has tried the prunes, plums, laxitives (they were actually prescribed by the doctors), stuff like metamucel, and even the extreme of mineral oil and glycerine, but with very little success. I will tell her about miso. Where can I get some ? I fly back to South Africa to see her on the 17th of next month, so maybe I can take some back (not sure if she will be able to get it there or not.) How do you take flax seed meal ? I've fed flax seed to our horses a few years ago to help with the coat, but it was pretty disgusting, so I'm curious about the meal. lol Thanks again, Shilo janet wrote: Make sure that your mother is getting enough fluid intake that is for one thing. They said it was from the bile entering her blood stream that was causing the itching, and put her on meds. She says they do help, but dry her out horribly. She now suffers with very dry skin and worst of all, very bad constipation. Does anyone know of a natural constipation cure ? She has tried many things, but so far with no luck. Guest guest
I find the taste of flax seed meal to be very appealing. Sprinkled on food it looks something like wheat germ. I find the seed I grind myself in an old recycled coffee mill to be superior to the pre-ground seed. And I far prefer the plain brown seed to the " golden " seed that is now available. The golden tastes bitter to me. I know, the advertising has it the other way around. Maybe my taste buds are backward? But start with sprinkling no more than a teaspoon at a time. The flax seed can be a bit abrasive to some folks sometimes. Building up slowly can ameliorate the abrasiveness of it. Also, has she used a regular stool softener? Stool softener is different than a laxative. Is there impaction? Those could be important considerations, too. Sally Re: Question regarding hep C/PBC Thanks so much to everyone for all the input ! Guest guest
I don't care for the " golden " seed, either, Sally. I've got a separate grinder for the flaxseed, too. I sprinkle flaxseed on my dinner, or in my sandwich. I've mixed it in oatmeal, and sprinkled on my scrambled eggs. Definitely start with a teaspoon or two and work your way up, but once it's not a bad habit to get into your diet. Guest guest
> I will tell her about miso. Where can I get some ? In the US at least it's only available in health food stores. There's some fascinating history about miso. It used to be produced and/or guarded by ninja warriors, supposedly. I really don't know that much about it. Just remember, do not boil miso or you might kill the beneficial bacteria. Miso is a 'cultured' producted, meaning it has 'live culture,' similar to most yogurt, old fashioned saur kraut, Koren kim chi, and probably bunches of other stuff we don't know about. Not everyone will like it. But its flavor is not strong and it can easily blend with soups, etc. My 96 yr old grandfather didn't care for it, but my kids enjoy it when added to a soup, as long as I don't tell them what I did!
