Guest guest
None of the instructions actually on the inserts for any thyroid products, including Armour, say to take sublingually, they all say once a day, usually in the morning. Sublingual dosing is what a lot of good thyroid doctors recommend for the natural thyroid products, but not for any synthetic T4 only meds. The reason for that is that the idea is that these will eventually turn into T3 slowly in the body, but direct T3 can be taken on directly in the bloodstream without going through the liver processing, and still maintain what it originally was/is. Guest guest
I swallow mine too. Are there any studies that prove that calcitonin and parathyroid are destroyed by digestive juices? Do folks have to adjust their dose if they take it sublingually (i.e. is it more potent that way)? I'd think even if you let it dissolve under your tongue (or in your cheek), you're still going to end up swallowing a lot of it. -- how do you take your Armour? -----Original Message-----From: Jan Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2004 6:36 PMTo: Texas_Thyroid_Groups Subject: Re: taking armour sublingually??? There is nothing in the prescribing information to suggest that Armour should be taken sublingually. Some thyroid patients came up with this. Some folks find that they have better absorption. I swallow mine. But if I were very concerned about my bone density, I might try taking Armour sublingually, because that would give me some chance of absorbing some of the calcitonin and parathyroid hormone which are both present in Armour. They are destroyed by digestive juices.Courtenay wrote: I just finished reading a post on another site that recommended taking Armour sublingually. Guest guest
I have read a couple of papers where doctors have had their patients dissolve or chew their Thyroid medication. Once, when a binder used in the pill was too good and it didn't dissolve in the stomach and once when a patient had a problem with a binder interfering with uptake. Armour, unlike Synthroid, can cross the skin boundary in the delicate tissue under the tongue. Synthroid must get contact with stomach acid to remove the sodium so it becomes real thyroid hormone. Swallowing the Armour pill will expose the thryoid hormones, which are made of a simple protien with Iodine on it, to the effects of digestive enzymes and stomach acids, which are designed to break up proteins and other nutrients into small pieces for absorption into the body and so they can be used as building blocks. So, you will get some losses by swallowing. It is probably not much. So, dissolving it under the tongue or chewing will probably give a slightly higher dose. But, it doesn't really matter as long as you do it the same way all the time. That way you can be more accurate with tests and adjusting dosees to get right blood levels. Guest guest
I dissolve mine sublingually under the tongue. Yes, you're going to swallow the solid material, but it is the T3 that absorbs microscopically under the tongue. The parathyroid I don't know about, but the stomach acids do destroy the calcitonin. This is another good reason to take it sublingually because calcitonin can be absorbed that way. I figure that I might end taking a lot more, if I only swallowed it. My practical nature also says that it's more for my money, if I take it sublingually. Either way, consistency is the key to know what your optimal dose is. RE: taking armour sublingually??? Guest guest
Thank you , , Tish, Jan and everybody for your responses on the Armour/sublingual question! I have slowly started to switch to sublingual application. Tish, are you a medical journalist? You should be-- you have a really succinct way of describing medical issues! Thank goodness for all of y'all! You are wonderful people. Sorry I have been so slow to respond-- I've been really symptomatic for the last two days, and I am trying to get to the bottom of it. Best wishes-- Courtenay. I have read a couple of papers where doctors have had their patients dissolve or chew their Thyroid medication. Guest guest
Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well right now Courtenay. Hang in there, okay? Let us know if you feel any better/worse on the sublingual method. I tried dividing my dose into 3 times a day instead of 2 times a day but some hypo symptoms that had started to abate came back with a vengeance so I'm back to 2x day dosing and feel better. I just learned a good lesson. Follow doctor's orders. :-) (when you have a good doctor)~ Tish has an amazing amount of knowledge. It's good to see her here! Take care. -----Original Message-----From: Courtenay Sent: Wednesday, September 08, 2004 4:24 PMTo: Texas_Thyroid_Groups Subject: Re: taking armour sublingually??? Guest guest
Those hypo symptoms can be a bear! I'm still fighting with the insomnia, and I've had a resurgence of hypo symptoms for the last two days-- my menses is about to start. So, I'm just laying low and watching lots of classic movies that I borrowed from the library. Just went to the doctor today, and I was just getting ready to post about that. Thanks so much for your concern and well wishes. I am so glad to hear that you have confidence in your doctor-- that makes all the difference. Best-- Courtenay.
