I have a couple of lower body only dvds that I think I could do, like an older one from the FIRM and Tony Horton's Thigh Trimmer. And yeah, the abs I can do too. It's just that they'll throw in an upper arm movement and I'll do it without thinking, and then I get that pain telling me that I shouldn't have done that!I think I will try running again, though. Or at the very least running after my son in the park. He's pretty speedy for a 3-yr old. Thanks! xoNamikoTo: exercisevideos Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 11:59 AMSubject: Re: Tennis elbow - so aggravated

Oh man, that sucks Namiko!! Pilates workouts usually involve abs and lower body. Running? Can you buy a brace for it?Hugs

Can you wrap the elbow before working out so that it CAN'T do the " bad motions? "

Sometime the soft-tissue injuries are harder to deal with than bone breaks...

Indyrose,

who's done both bone and soft tissue injuries

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear this, Namiko! Ibuprofen, maybe ice and rest will hopefully help and just trying to be mindful of the arm when you're doing lower body or abs... not easy to do that but maybe just walking for a while is best? This kind of injury comes back if you don't really rest it and get rid of the inflammation (been there, done that). On the kid thing... I had my mastectomy and then a reconstruction surgery when my daughter was 2 1/2 and just turned 3 and I was unable to lift more than 5 pounds for 2 months each time. I explained that mommy had a boo boo and couldn't lift her for a while because it hurt too much but that we could do other things instead. She eventually learned, with a lot of gentle repetition that mommy can't lift you because it hurts, that we could snuggle on the couch instead and that made her happier anyway. She did very well with the no lifting overall but I think it was harder on me! It was so automatic for me to just pick her up and haul her around, lift her in and out of her crib (we had to move her to a toddler bed because of it) and in and out of grocery carts or even just to pick her up and hug her that it was really hard for me to remember! I had to force myself not to lift her and really hard to focus on what I was doing and make sure I was doing the right thing. It was worth it because I didn't add any trouble to the already sore area and recovered very quickly each of those two times because I was being so mindful of what I was doing. God luck with this, it isn't any fun!

Tennis elbow - so aggravated

I've joined the ranks of the injured in this group, albeit slightly. :(For days (okay, more like almost two weeks) I've had this nagging pain in my left elbow, on the outside, next to the little bump of bone there. Even things like lifting a carton of milk out of the fridge or turning off the faucet causes a sharp pain. After a few days of Ignore It and Hope That It'll Go Away, an Internet self-diagnosis told me that it's most likely tennis elbow. I even think I know when I first tweaked that area - I should NOT have lifted so heavy, but I thought I could handle it since I wasn't doing so many reps. Lesson learned! The bad thing is, I'm constantly lifting at least 33 pounds - namely, my kid - and even Turbo Kick (the punches) seem to make the elbow hurt. I was thinking of videos I could do but almost all of them involve the arms somehow, even if it's not the focus. I don't have too many DVDs where I don't have to bend the arms too much or put weight on them, like for pushups or planks. I guess I should consider running for cardio? And making my son clamber up my leg somehow? *laughs* Okay maybe not. Thanks for letting me vent! And hope the rest of the week is a good for everyone!Namiko

UGh! Sorry to hear htat - I think had some good advice and I think the good news is, if you rest, it, and let it heal it works itself out. I think DH had this a few years ago and he is ok now - just took it easy for awhile.

I'm not sure how to wrap this elbow without going to the doctor but that's a good idea, thanks. I read to take ibuprofen or any anti-inflammatory but I don't think the area is all that inflamed. I kind of don't want to take anything for the pain because I feel like the pain is the only way I know when not to do something, right? I should ice it more though.I think I might need to see a doctor anyway, though. Right now I went to pick up my yogurt with my left hand and the pain was so bad I couldn't do it.Argh,NamikoTo: exercisevideos Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 1:46 PMSubject: Re: Tennis elbow - so aggravated

Thanks, !I'm trying to rest it as best I can but life definitely gets in the way! I totally get you with how certain things are automatic, though. I WANT to pick up my kid after a long day at work and this doesn't help any.My son had a better time of understanding that I couldn't lift him when I had my thyroid removed because I had that big scar across my neck, but he's eyeing me with suspicion now. Plus he's such a little rough and tumble kind of boy - his idea of love is launching himself off the couch onto my lap, you know? Man, it sucks getting older!NamikoTo: exercisevideos Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 4:50 PMSubject: Re: Tennis elbow - so aggravated

Ugh, I know, I know. You are so right. I hadn't even thought about the healing aspect of pain relievers. I guess I kept thinking it would go away on its own (with rest) but it's not cooperating.I'm asking around for some good ortho doctors now. I can't imagine surgery is an option but I would like to get a real diagnosis. Thank you for the virtual shove, I needed it! :)NamikoTo: exercisevideos Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 10:16 AMSubject: Re: Tennis elbow - so aggravated

If the pain is that bad, you (a) need to see a doctor and (B) need anti-inflammatories. The pain is not meant to just be an indicator you've overdone something again but it is an indicator that it is well overdone already. Anti-inflammatories are not just for pain relief they reduce the inflammation and help heal the affected area. They also help the rest of the body because your body is more stressed when it is pain and when it is trying to heal the area on its own (without any kind of help). It sounds worse than tennis elbow, btw. I'd have it checked out and then follow doctor's orders.

(patient of many for strains, sprains and worse and who finally learned that following doctor's orders, no matter how frustrating, really does work)

(patient of many for strains, sprains and worse and who finally learned that following doctor's orders, no matter how frustrating, really does work)

, if I were in your neck of the woods I'd probably lie about how much pain I was in just so I could workout with you, not gonna lie! :)But yeah, I'm getting some recommendations for doctors now...NamikoTo: exercisevideos Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 11:04 AMSubject: Re: Tennis elbow - so aggravated

You were right to try rest first but when that doesn't work then you know it is time to get it looked at. I always think the worst, that I'll need surgery, etc. but my injuries have very rarely been that bad and the diagnosis actually makes me feel much more relieved (to know what is going on and how to get rid of it). Keep us informed, we all care! And you're welcome for the shove, it is one of my more "endearing" talents! (just ask my DH and WW members!) ;-)
