Guest guest Posted November 20, 2004 Report Share Posted November 20, 2004 A relative (who has no idea that my child has OCD) casually mentioned to me over dinner that her 4 year old son had some strange behaviors. For one, he refuses to eat or even touch anything without smelling it first. He won't even let you hug him unless he smells you first and it's okay with him. If he drops something on the floor he will refuse to pick it up because he says its too dirty. He also says strange things, like he sees angels and that the angels are evil and want to kill him. We weren't able to continue the conversation, and I didn't want to say anything to her at that moment about OCD, since I too am just learning about this for the past two months when my daughter was first diagnosed. I asked her if he constantly washes his hand and she said yes, but not excessively. Could these symptoms be signs of early OCD? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted November 22, 2004 Report Share Posted November 22, 2004 Yes it could be, but it could also be some other problem, or even just a " phase " as parents used to say :-) OCD is diagnosed when the symptoms cause the child considerable distress and prevent him from participating in his normal " occupations " such as attending preschool or playing with friends. My daughter had her onset at age four and was diagnosed and placed on medication the month she turned five, so your relative's son is not too young to have this disorder. If your relative asks, you could suggest she take her son for an assessment.
