Guest guest
Dear Bruce and others... I have an idea that I would like to propose to those of this group. Just as our New England war tax resister/refuser group plans a gathering each fall - has anyone of this group considered the idea of hosting/planning a vegan macrobiotic gathering - that would bring like minded souls together along with people interested in learning of macrobiotics from a vegan point of view? I would offer to help put one together - I have experience cooking for workshops and in organizing events. A gathering could be held in any number of places in our area - or another area people feel might be more centrally located. I do not have macrobiotic 'credentials' but have years of knowledge and understanding gleaned from reading on my own and personal experience rather than taking courses through Kushi Institute. [Not that the Kushi Institute is not a lovely place]. If others with 'credentials' were interested in coming together to offer a workshop or 2 we would have an opportunity to share what we have learned over the years. [Tom Monte lives here in Amherst - has offered a few evening programs on aspects of macrobiotics here - as well as cooking classes on Saturday mornings in his home.] Any interest in such an endeavor? There are 5 colleges of students living in our little valley along with a progressive activist community. Or there is Earthlands - a retreat center/ecological living center off the grid - over in sham MA that I believe would be open to hosting such a gathering. What do people think of the idea? Em Let the beauty we love be what we do. Rumi Let everything you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14 'Love is the measure.' Dorothy Day 'Gather yourselves...All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner.' Guest guest
Hi Em, I've been off-line over the holidays, but just read all your wonderful posts. They really touched me. I would encourage you to start any type of group. I learned macrobiotics in Japan and then returned to Hawaii where I've started cooking classes, personal chef work, and monthly dinners -- a business entirely from scratch -- and wonderful things have manifested in 1 year and 7 mos. The dinners in particular are consistently sold out with rave reviews! I'm sure any group you could put together would be appreciated and welcomed. Macrobiotic Community Dinner Mission Statement Our goals are to: • build community by providing a forum for people to meet, share, and exchange information and ideas as equal human beings through healthy discussions. • cook healthy food of the best possible quality available with positive energy. Organic ingredients (such as grains, beans, and leafy greens) are our priority, and we purchase traditionally handcrafted/harvested products (like sea vegetables, miso, amazake, shoyu, and umeboshi vinegar). We enter the kitchen with joy and happiness that we can share what we have learned with others, and to express ourselves through the meditative art of cooking. • nourish people in body, mind, and spirit. We believe that we care for our bodies when we eat good food, showing self-respect and self-love, which increases our quality of life. • stand by the environment by using local and seasonal ingredients whenever possible, thereby reducing the amount of petroleum needed to ship items here. Buying locally and seasonally also supports the local economy. • provide a fair and living wage for the markets and companies we purchase from, for the farmers, and for ourselves, based on the quality of food we prepare for our customers.
