Action Alert 2/9/2010

Federal Bill Threatens Local Foods

Consumers are increasingly seeking out local

foods, but the food safety bill being considered by the U.S. Senate threatens

farmers' ability to raise, and consumers' ability to access, healthy local

foods. As currently written, the legislation -- S. 510 -- would drive many

small farmers and food producers out of business with unnecessary, burdensome

regulations.

The numerous recalls that have caused fears over

food safety were all from the large, industrial food system. Local producers

are not the problem. Local and state authorities already oversee local food

production, and we do not need FDA regulation of every small farm and food

producer in the country.

Contact your Senators today! Ask them to push

for amendments to be introduced to stop S. 510 from destroying local, healthy

food and local jobs and income.

TAKE ACTION

1) Call or write your Senators. You can find

their contact information at http://www.senate.gov/ or call the Capitol

Switchboard at .

Ask to speak to the staffer who handles food

safety issues. Talk with th staffer about the importance of local foods, both

fresh from the farm and from local processors (such as locally made jams,

pickles, breads, and cheeses). Ask them to work to introduce amendments to

exempt small and direct-marketing farms and processors. If they are interested,

please let us know so we can follow up with them.

The Western Organization of Resource Councils

has a sample letter and automatic emailing system that you can use by clicking

2) Meet your Senators! The Senate will be

recessed next week (February 15-19) and the Senators will be back in their home

States. Contact your Senators' local offices to determine if they are going to

be in or near your community during the Senate Recess. If so, either ask for a

meeting to discuss this issue OR plan to attend any public listening sessions

where you can ask them to support the critically needed changes to S. 510.

Thank you for your efforts on this legislation

in the past few months. Please keep the pressure on!
