If the member number has a three digit alpha

prefix (xxx##########), then they are part of the bluecard program and you can

see them, and then bill your local BCBS provider. You will be reimbursed at

your contract rate. If they have a number like a social security number and

the card is issued directly from blue cross, it probably means it is an old

card and they need to get you their new number. Make sure you call and verify benefits

on a card without an alpha prefix. (At least that is how it works in SW Washington.)

hi moitri,

you should send the hcfa form to the address listed on

the back of the patient's insurance card. this is the

way i have done it. as far as i know, i don't see any

reason why you can't see someone from new jersey,

anyone disagree?

Here in Rochester I send all local and out-of-state " blues " to my local

insurer and checks come from them.

I do have a slightly different ID number (I think it's off by a single

digit) for the local and other blues and that's programmed into my ezclaim

program so it gets printed automatically (ie- I don't think about it). I

guess that'll change when I finally get my new identifier in the next

couple months.

Here in Ohio, I have several patients with Empire BCBS, local is Anthem. I initially sent them to claim address on the back of card and never got paid, then I read the small print and it said to send to my local BCBS provider and eventually got paid. Ernie is right about the prefix thing. .

Hi Moitri,

You always send BCBS claims to the local

office, even if they are out of state. For example, people I see with BCBS

from TX, AZ, etc, all get their claims sent to the Denver, CO

office.
