Guest guest
I loved this article! My son sleeps in bed with me and is always in my arms (my sling doesn't arrive for another 2 weeks) and I get a lot of finger wagging from my in-laws about it. He will also be vegetarian, and my MIL has already freaked out and said "he needs to eat meat". In fact they were over today and insisted I start to formula feed my 5week old right now and to stop breast-feeding. Thank goodness for Reggie, this article has made me feel 'normal' again! Guest guest
Oh girl you need all the support with all those whackos. What's the rationale behind his needing meat? What about the formula thing? Why do they think that artificial breast milk is better than what G-d gave you to give your child? Why do they think that the breast milk of a cow is better suited for your human child? I can't wait to get up there Sin! off to upload the pix of your gorgeous little boy. Guest guest
mama, Is your husband in agreement with you (I hope!!) - can he tell them to get off your back!!! You've got a FULL load just dealing with your sweet new boy, you don't need ANY stress from any other source!!! Are you also on Simon's discussion list - just replied to another new mother, telling her how important it is for her to rest, if mom's not rested then the milk is more acidic and then baby wants more, creating a cycle you don't need - and it's hard enough to rest with new baby, but ridiculous to have other sources of stress - when they come over, excuse yourself, tell them how tired you are, and just LEAVE!!!!!! hope they get the message!!!!! Guest guest
You're right , it's a great article and I was so happy to read Peggy's comment: "I'm a minimalist," says Peggy O'Mara, publisher and editor of Mothering magazine, which focuses on natural family living. "I had kids in the 70s [when] the ethic was 'small is beautiful' and rejecting the cultural bias for more, more, more. It's amusing to see something that started in a purist way now getting gobs of profits." Her writing in Mothering magazine always inspired me so - always right on target. and again here, funny how the green way means also big greenback dollars!!! And lots of contact numbers at the bottom - nothing is better than having real life support!!!! so you totally realize you are not at all crazy!!!!! but the rest of the world might be. Guest guest
Hi, I think a little patience is required--why call the relatives " wackos " when they are in the majority and have been conditioned to think that eating meat is necessary to good health? Their concern is for the child. We are the minority and considered wackos by most of the western world. Maybe ask them to read some really basic, easy-to-grasp literature on vegetariansim or veganism, that can assure them that all will be well? chad
Guest guest
and Chad, that's Reggie, so be warned, she does shocking things :>) Trying to influence others is a very tiring experience - and for a new mother, just not worth all the effort, really. Nice idea, but.... Over the years, in different discussion groups, we've had this discussion many times. On one hand, yes, we want to spread our ideas, and yes, we want others to understand - otoh, we just need to take care of ourselves, the best we can, and it's just so much harder with people trying to change our minds. my advice is to take a Dale Carnegie course, on How to Win Friends and Influence People - not that I became so great at it either. If you look, you'll see that even some wonderful teachers and counselors are struggling with the same issues with their own families - I've seen it. Klara Re: calling all moms Chad, and I are friends for many years and I know the history of these people. I will not retract that wackos observation as they are indeed wackos.Reggie>> Hi, I think a little patience is required--why call the relatives "wackos" > when they are in the majority and have been conditioned to think that eating > meat is necessary to good health? Guest guest
I wasn't asking for a retraction, but from what Simon and Ilanit have said in the recent past, this list is certainly open for discussion. My observation was that maybe we can afford to be a little kinder. These folks may be wackos or not, however you want to define that word--is it a technical term?--wacko like beauty is usually in the eye of the beholder--but hopefully macrobiotics brings emotional as well as physical balance to us--and it seems harsh to use such strong language, because it does seem to boil down to carnivore vs. mb. " Let there be peace, and let it begin with me " . Of course I don't know the situation, but since this was posted on a public list I figured a comment wouldn't be off-base. Guest guest
Hi , Yes I know I meant my comments as though they were for them. Perhaps you could challenge them to come up with respected independent evidence to show the meat and formula are necessary for a child that is being breast fed. There is a great book called Difficult Conversations by Fisher, Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen. It helps you take control of your own life / situation and communicate in a way that is respectful / understanding but is true to yourself. Guest guest
Hi Chad, Yes I agree that backing people into corners just makes for a bigger reaction and somehow if we can help them feel safe about dropping long held beliefs they may be more open to a change. All the best, Simon I wasn't asking for a retraction, but from what Simon and Ilanit have said in the recent past, this list is certainly open for discussion.
