Guest guest Posted April 10, 2006 Report Share Posted April 10, 2006 I have to admit I am worried about these, although the nearest one to me, is over 30 minutes away. They seem to only be set up to take the easy stuff, the colds, UTI, etc. But I like having some of these each day, I don't want to be left with only difficult issues. On the other hand a second Urgent Care just opened 5 min from me, about 6 mo ago. And I haven't seen any drop in my business. I continue to have good word of mouth. He talked about disruptive innovation and described the minute clinics. They are definitely a threat to us and we'll be hard pressed to counter their locations, but we have several things that they can't touch. We have MD We have continuity And we can match and beat their access & efficiency. Some of our patients will use them, but in the wider marketplace we will not suffer from these sites. Patients in usual and customary practices will go to them much more readily. They will be open late, have immediate access to pharmacy and have large pocket book behind them. I am too tired to be open 8-8 6 or 7 days a week. In many areas the MD is being downgraded. You can practice in my state independently as a Nurse Practioner. Why would you go to medical school with the costs if you can set up a shingle? No they are not equivalent however the public in the future may be duped. The nurses lobby have quite the power at governmental levels. Continuity, maybe, depends on the patient. They tend to catch the patient that didn't come to see my kind of practice. Most of their patients, in my experience, are people who don't want a relationship with a doctor, don't want anyone to know about their history. I imagine they will want to get things like their antibiotics for their colds, or their vicoden for their bad leg, while they are on the way to the gas station, while getting some diapers and extra junk food on the way out the door. In the animal world we find they get the equivalent things: Panalog for their dog's recurrent ear infection or a quick rabies shot so they can cross the border into Canada, while they are getting dog food and chewey toys. These are the " they came, they went...and no one misses them" kind of encounters. Don't worry.
