Guest guest
I always make a cherry pie on President's Day. What's the connection? Washington was first you see, he once cut down a cherry tree... Getting the cherries has become a challenge. Sour cherries seem to have become an endangered species. I used to be able to find them occasionally in the stores. I haven't seen any for YEARS! They seem to have been replaced by something called " dark cherries " . I once thought I figured out what these might be, but can't remember what it was now. I am sure though, that they are a poor substitute as far as the health value and the taste! SO...I finally decided to get my own tree! A few years ago, I excitedly planted a tiny North Star cherry tree in my backyard. The next summer, I didn't get any cherries as, being a novice, I didn't realize they ripen in June. The following summer, the birds ate them as soon as they got ripe. Every single one! All that was left were stems and pits! How disappointing! That resulted in me getting netting for my tree. I think that year, I actually got enough cherries for one small pie. I was thrilled! The summer after that, I went on vacation for a week. The cherries weren't anywhere near ready when I left, but I was smart, and made sure they were netted before I left. When I got back, no cherries! Apparently they had ripened enough and the squirrels (a fairly new addition to our neighborhood) had climbed up the trunk underneath the netting and eaten them! So these cherries came from Sam Kedum's Nursery down in Hastings. They are organic and beautiful and tasty, but I had to pick them AND pay for them. This spring, I'm determined to get cherries off of my own tree! Kathy
Guest guest
Hi Kathy, What variety of tree did you plant? And where did you purchase it? I'd like to try to grow cherries too.
