Guest guest
Debbi, I've never watched Monk, but I will bet anything that he never received the therapy your son has started. I know for a fact that the character in " As Good As It Gets " never did. So take these shows with a grain of salt. They are for " entertainment " (only those who aren't currently suffering with OCD would find this entertaining) and it would be pretty boring to watch someone who used to have severe OCD but is now managing it! I suppose they do serve a purpose in educating the public, but I also think OCD'ers get stereotyped into these roles, and as we all know there are so many different manifestations of this disorder. If I were you I would refrain from watching this stuff until your son's doing better, unless you can find a show with a success story in it! nna NY > Hi, I've posted a few times about my 9 yr old ocd hoarder. Parents should relate to Drefuss' character (the psychiatrist) whose life has been turned upside down by Bob (murray) and his *extreme* case of OCD. But, please keep in mind that Bob has it BAD. Hollywood exaggerates his symptoms to the max for entertainment value. " baby steps, Bob - baby steps! " Joni

It *is* pretty entertaining. It helps my kids to see just how " silly " OCD can be, and they continually talk about what Monk ought to be doing instead of giving in to the OCD. Guest guest
Debbi, Monk is just entertainment. Wouldn't be entertaining if we just watched him go through actual therapy, getting better, etc. He's not going through any actual OCD therapy or on any meds. But it's the OCD part of him that helps in solving crimes. It's been good for us to be able to laugh and be amused by OCD. And we can say what he " should be doing " so far as therapy. I like that and I can say the " should " part as it tells me that he knows what " he " should be doing. > Hi, I've posted a few times about my 9 yr old ocd hoarder. Guest guest
Here's another " view " on shows, movies etc. with OCD characters. I saw " As Good As It Gets " with my daughter (she was about 10 or 11 at the time) and my husband, both of whom have OCD. We had no idea it was about OCD, we just knew it was rated PG and we wanted to see a movie at the theater. As it became clear that the guy had OCD my husband got a little squirmy and Ava got very excited yelling " hey! that's what I do! " when the guy wouldn't step on a crack and various other things. She was thrilled to see " what she does " on the big screen. It made her feel like she wasn't the only one. My husband, who lived without treatment all of his life until the past few years, felt ashamed and uncomfortable. But Ava loved the movie and has seen it 3-4 times. It made her feel validated, somehow, and gave her inspiration and hope that with treatment she would never get " as bad as that when she grew up " . Guest guest
What channel, day and time is MONK on? I have never seen it but know it gets awards and recall the actor from another show long ago, but just not at this moment. I loved As good as it gets, laughed a lot, but did not have my son watch it. Guest guest
Hi all, I guess what I was trying to say re: these shows, movies is that when you are at the lowest point in your family with OCD, I don't think it helps to watch them. I agree it can be very helpful once things are better to be able to laugh at it all, but I know Debbi isn't there yet. It is so hard to imagine ever laughing at any of this when you're just starting out with meds/therapy. My husband and I did enjoy As Good As It Gets (he has manageable, non- treated OCD), and he was relieved seeing someone who was worse off than he! nna. Guest guest
Hi, it's me, the orignial poster. I guess what I was really looking for is a movie with someone doing similar things that my son is doing. He watched part of Monk and really seemed relieved to see that there are other people like him. He was even laughing. Some parts are just hysterical! We rented the first episode, what a hoot! lol Those of you who mentioned that I may not be ready for these shows, well, you're right. I could laugh at the funny stuff he does, but feel so sad about comments others make, etc. It's sort of a roller coaster ride to watch it. A while ago someone suggested my son watch Little Man Tate because it reminded them of my son. We began watching it and right away my son started crying. He said it was exactly like him (no one showing up for his birthday party, etc) and we had to turn it off. But in this case (ocd) he really wanted to know that there were other people out there with ocd. He'd love to meet others with it, but people must keep it a secret because I can't find any and have never noticed any. My son is very noticable in the stores, picking up stuff from the floor and all. Ok, gotta run, dh is hungry. Just wanted to say that I appreciate all the comments about movies and understand that it might not be the best thing for us to watch them. Guest guest
Here in our part of NC, Monk comes on the USA channel on Fridays at 10PM. I think it's repeated at some other time during the week. At one time it was picked up to show the reruns on another channel. Probably if you go to the show site, there might be something to show when/where it comes on in your area. He used to be on the show Wings, but I've seen him in several things, I guess I tend to notice him more now. What with the show changing this upcoming season (no aide/Sherona - sp? and at least one new character), I hope the show stays as good! > What channel, day and time is MONK on? Guest guest
I have to say when Monk first began, 's OCD was a lot better. I'm not sure how he would have handled seeing it when he was at his worst with OCD. I sort of think it might have helped to see that this problem is " out there " in the world and known about. But I can also picture him probably leaving the room to avoid even watching it or getting upset. Yes, it was nice to see him enjoy it, and to have his twin watch too. Heck, sort of wish had the " things have to be clean, everything in its place " part of OCD like Monk. (OK, OK, no I don't, we do not need any meltdowns/anxiety over that!) > > Hi all, > > I guess what I was trying to say re: these shows, movies is that when > you are at the lowest point in your family with OCD, I don't think it
Guest guest
Monk comes on here at 10pm Fridays (channel 58) and repeats again at midnight Friday. Another repeat on Sat, I think at noon. I'm just outside of Los Angeles. Little Man Tate is " not " about an ocd child. Sorry if anyone thought that. I was writing fast because dh was getting upset with me being on the computer. Little Man Tate is about a profoundly gifted boy. Sorry for the confusion. Debbi

Guest guest
I love this movie, and what kills me is how, at the end, Bob is cured, but the shrink is catatonic, until he is witnessing Bob marrying his very own sister. Guest guest
Yep Wings was the show I knew him the actor from. I did find the website and think it will be 9 pm here in Los Angeles. I hope the USA network does not butcher shows like Lifetime does when they make changes. I stopped watching two shows this season plus they cancelled over the last two years two good ones. I have heard of another show on TNT or TBS called The Shield, where the guy has a child with autism, but never watched it and not sure I want to from what I have read on the episode guides. Anyone here watch The Shield? Thanks for the info on the Monk. Bonnie ================ wrote: Here in our part of NC, Monk comes on the USA channel on Fridays at 10PM.
