Guest guest
Oh brother. So I had this dilemma about 's low grade temp for the last week and a half plus her abominable behavior. No other symptoms, no URI. Barbie said to call the ped so I finally did. Was going to watch her today and lo and behold, here comes the opaque stuff from the nose (clear as a bell up 'til that moment?!). So I get her over to the ped and it's a full blown sinus infection. The theory is that the sinus infection she had during her pneumonia (8/29) only got partially treated, seeing as it's only been a week since she's been off the amox/augmentin combo. So now she's on Omnicef and may need a long course to kick it. Any words of wisdom? This sinus stuff is all new to us. Ped said may even need 3-4 weeks of treatment? I hate the looks of pity from the nurses and staff -- they feel so bad for her that she is sick so frequently. And she's soooo sweet to them and precocious ( " Hi, two peoples! " and " No sticks " ), they just can't take it. I'm thankful it's nothing serious, but am starting to just want to cry with each new thing, hasn't she had enough? Sigh. Thanks for letting me vent, and for any info. (mom to , age 2-1/2, polysaccharide antibody def, IgA def)

Guest guest
, hugs to with yet another infection going. How do they diagnose sinus infection? I always presumed sinus infection would have to mean a yellow or green discharge? , and s mum Re: Sinus Infection Oh brother. Guest guest
: I'm so glad the new immuno seems to be determined to look at all of 's problems together. I mean, what are the odds they aren't connected? There are too many things going on with him for it all to be coincidence, don't you think? Anyway, I hope they can help you. Re: sinus stuff -- what they told me was that any mucus can be opaque or yellow or green once it hits the air. But if it's really thick and opaque and colored up in the nose (and you see lots of that when you blow into a tissue) or looking like that while dripping in copious amounts down the back of the throat then they suspect infection. The above 2 things plus the low grade temps and irritability, plus it being one week after ending abx with the previous pneumonia and sinus infection made them feel sure. Oh, and also pressing on 's forehead and cheeks and watching her reaction for pain. BUT this is all new to me, I don't have a lot of experience with sinus stuff. I remember others here mentioning horrible breath too. She also has dark circles and looks like her eyes are a bit swollen or have pressure behind them. And pale...you know, sick looking. My question is has anyone ever had a severe secondary infection from sinus infection? I mean, we are always nervous with ear infections because it was an unresolved ear infection that led to the meningitis. I'm wondering if I can cross that off my worry list with all these sinus infections here lately. Guest guest
Hi , What you have described with the purple circles and swelling and of course the bad breathe let alone the sad look on the face is most definitely a sinus infection. Chelsea has severe Sinus disease and has had four sinus surgeries which have all failed. Chelsea did pretty well this year from about April until we got home from the conference in Baltimore in June. During the flight home she got a double middle ear, sinus and throat infection. It was awful. After six weeks of cefzil and augmentin we were clear for almost two weeks and now we have croup and it appears another sinus infection brewing. This has been going on since Chelsea was 8 months old and now that she is six we can normally figure out just when an infection is to come on which is what you described. Also if you apply your fingers lightly right under their eyes and the pull back that confirms it. I hope your pumpkin feels better very soon and my thoughts and prayers are with you and all the other pumpkins... Guest guest
, Dark circles under the eyes, eyes kind of swollen looking, like pressure is behind them, pale, bad breath.... you just described to a T when he has a full blown sinus infection. Those are what gives him the nose bleeds. Augmentin is the only thing that has kicked it for Sam, and that was after a round or two of other abx. Bless her heart. I hate that all these babies have to go through this stuff. It's extra hard when they are too young to really communicate. I pray for God's blessing on . Guest guest
, I've always thought it strange that even when is in the middle of a full blown sinus infection, he has no discharge. It is very rare for him to have even a runny nose, let alone the gunky yellow/green stuff. Just the nosebleeds, and they *usually* occur at night. (The Bactriban ointment applied in the nose seems to help prevent the frequency of the nose bleeds.) They usually diagnose him by visually looking up his nose with their magnification instrument (you'd think I'd know the name of it by now - I usually just call it " that do-hicky " ). And I suspect that when his cough starts acting up, it is probably due to drainage. But, oddly enough, it doesn't drain through his nose. Guest guest
Our ENT says 21 days of abx is average/minimum & with resistant bugs or chronic sinus disease the treatment time increases to anywhere from 4 - 6 weeks. We often do a 4 week course of a strong or " big gun " antibiotic, like Ceftin or Omnicef & then follow up with a " low dose long term maintenance " dose of a lower level drug like Amoxicillin. Just our experience for what it's worth...probably not much. Good Luck! I hope all the Pumpkins are feeling better soon....mine included :- Beth, Mom to Wade, 14 yr. Guest guest
A word to the wise. Seek medical treatment early if you get a sinus infection ( stuffy nose, green discharge, ear involvement, facial pain, etc.) I have the exact same sinus/ear infection as . I know several healthy people that have had it also. It seems to take some healthy folks a month or more to get over it. In my case, it started as a head cold, then turned into an all-out sinus infection. I woke up deaf in one ear when it first started, and the ear problem keeps coming and going. One antibiotic, Ceftin didn't quite do the trick. The infection came back the day after I ended the prescription. I just started a different antibiotic course today. I've been off MTX for almost 6 weeks, and had to delay Remicade treatments (and MTX) until after this all clears up. So now I'm flaring, in addition to infection. I hope nobody else gets this. It isn't fun. I got it from my neighbors. I've asked them to warn me if anyone in their house is sick, due to my medications, but they had me over for dinner, and half way through, they told me their son was sick. Too late. i was sick two days later. -Brent Re: Update again -- I assume that when You said you got 4 of the one day doses, you meant Diflucan... Miracle stuff in my opinion. I have terrible problems on that front -- usually I am put on a 2 week course of diflucan (200mg on day 1, then 100mg/day for 13 days following) I hate taking that much of it, but it is the only thing that does the trick... Also, if the doctor that is prescribing this isn't your rheumy, and your rhuemy is keeping track of your liver enzymes, make sure you let them know you are taking diflucan -- it is hard on your liver... Another natural thing to do it get some Garlique (the are little garlic pills, that don't seem to give garlic breath 24/7) -- garlic is a natural anti-fungal, and I have found it helps fight them off as well. I don't know your dose on psuedo/guaifen, but I can tell you it is flying off the shelves down here with al the URI's that are going around this time of year.. One thing I can tell you is drink LOTS of water, it really helps things clear up. Best of luck, especially with you battle with the yeast monsters -- if you ever need a sympathetic ear, give me a holler...
