Guest guest
ARGHHH.... I feel like I'm just running around in circles here. When DS first starting acting odd and we learned about OCD, I immediately contacted a psychologist. He was really nice though he had my son crying all the time. (Bringing up bad memories, mostly) Anyway, from there we tried a psychiatrist that deals with OCD, CBT/ER. She's the one that prescribed meds and sent DS off to the hospital. We didn't care for the hospital program and called a new psychiatrist that we were told did CBT/ER and only dealt with children (and adults) with OCD. Meanwhile I've had many conversations on the phone, including 3 way phone call meetings with several other Dr's from UCLA, etc. Okay, so today we meet with the new Dr. Fill out all the paperwork, wait an hour in the waiting room, then see the Dr for 15 minutes. She tells me that she only prescribes meds, doesn't really do CBT and doesn't diagnose. (We had been told by her receptionist that she did) So where does this leave us? She tells me that before DS can get any help, he should be diagnosed. I ask her to recommend someone (because I am now all worn out). She tells me sure, she knows a great psychologist, Dr No. 1. HUH? He never told us anything about diagnosing my son. Do we go back to our original psycologist? I wonder if he'll want us back. I am just getting so frustrated. It's been one big circle, but I really feel like we are back to square one. <big sigh> Debbi

I have a PPO, so I can go where I want, when I want, although much better to say in network. This is just my opinion, what I would do, but you have to consider your circumstances, insurance, etc.

I have a Blue Cross PPO, and while they won't say exactly what they will pay, I am gathering up all the bills and submitting them. Something is better than nothing. Your insurance may very well cover more, once there is an official diagnoisis. Good luck.
Guest guest
I'm getting the " going in circles " feeling already, and we haven't even seen a dr. yet, other than family dr. I took ds to the dr. on dec 27, before the ocd got " too " bad. She said she preferred to send me to a Childrens Hosp about 1/2 hr from us, because all the drs around us just push meds. Well, after the run-around at the hosp, going thru 2 different depts, I finally got a call that we can get an appt in AUGUST!!!! Good gosh! Good thing he doesn't have cancer! So I contacted my fam.dr again, and she set up an appt with one of the dr's she first told me not to see. After some checking, turns out he's a psychiatrist, who only prescribes meds, no therapy. And he will not refer us to one of his psychologists until after 3 visits. 1st visit end of Feb, so by the time we do 3 appts and then get referred and actually in, it could be August again! Checking the psychologists there, most all of them say they do ocd, and most cbt....along with every other mental illness known. I'm worried that they are " jack of all trades, master of none. " My only other idea is to take ds to Univ. of Mich, which is a 2-1/2 hr drive one way. But they have a ocd clinic. I know many of you have run the cirlce for a lot longer than this. Are your therapists " general " therapists, or specializing in ocd? Should I jump thru all the hoops they're asking me, or just drive to U of M? DS is 6, in first grade, and school is slipping rapidly. Thanks....
Guest guest
, It is DEFINATELY worth taking the long drive to a place you know specializes in OCD, if only to get the helping process started! I would also schedule one in your area with one that claims to work with OCD just to get your foot in the door. If school is slipping rapidly it probably won't improve until some help is gotten. Can you further ask the ones who say they treat OCD what their percentage of children is who they treat? That might give you an idea how invovled they really are with it. That is if you can get that info from the receptionist! Guest guest
Thank you all!! My " gut feeling " is we need to make the drive! Nothing else feels right. Oh, that sounded just like ds!! Why is it so difficult to get help? No wonder mental illness is such a concern these days...I have dealt with various mental illnesses in people close to me, and there seems to be this problem system wide. > , > > It is DEFINATELY worth taking the long drive to a place you know specializes > in OCD, if only to get the helping process started!
