Tim:

NYS law allows $0.75 per page. Send them an invoice with your

copies...they will pay it.

Is workers comp an exception maybe? Not sure, but they may be entitled to a

free copy?

charge to copy records

I got my first lawyer letter asking for copies of records for my patient's

worker's comp case.

What are you charging to copy records?

I'll assume this is legal to ask as it does not relate to charges for care

or billed back to insurance. So we should be able to share this info,

right?

.... and, I have no financial interest in worker's comp or any lawyers! ;-)

This is to send records for the patient's lawyer who represents him for WC.

And their request included a mention of sending an invoice for charges...

$0.75 seems good to me.

Don't forget to figure in the postage charge before you seal the envelope as you should charge for that too. I always forget, seal the envelope before I weigh it, and then have to open it and reprint the invoice.

If the WC Board asked for records, you may have to provide those for free...but the attorneys on either side expect to pay for them.

Oh yes, $0.75 is quite " cheap " for records. Ohio allows up to $2.50 per

page for something like the first 20 pgs or so, then it goes down

sequentially after that.

Good point... and it gets me think about other charges... since I'm

solo-solo, can I charge for the TIME to mail the records? I'll take it to

the PO myself to get the weight/postage and send it off. I've worked as

an expert witness before and charge for door-to-door travel time (I forget

the legal term they use for that and won't check my old records) and have

a handsome per hour rate when in that role. So, why can't I charge

lawyers for the time to mail the records?

I may try it and see what happens.

I think that $0.75 is supposed to include time for copying....but you can certainly try to bill for whatever you want.

RE charging for records.

Folks-- you should not try to "guess" these fees; each State Board of Medicine sets these fees.

In Pennsylvania, there's fees per page, for processing, pulling records, etc. Sometimes you can't charge at all (subpoenas for ex).

Sometimes, life insurance companies in particular try to get records faxed to them, asking me to send the bill on. Don't do it!

1) Look up the fees you can charge.

2) Charge the fees

3) Get paid BEFORE you send anything (can't do it for SSI applications, but they pay a state set fee maximum).

Can't emphasize this more-- do NOT guess! This stuff is NOT logical, but set often by statute.
