Guest guest
- Prevnar came on the market year before last I believe and is a conjugated version of the pneumovax but only contains 7 of the most prevalent bacterial serotypes (the pneumovax has antigens to 23). It is supposed to work better and trick the faultier immune systems into a better IgM to IgG conversion during infection with these particular 7 types. Some patients have had good response, some poor and for some it hasn't made a difference. Each serotype should be judged on its own response and increase. Each type represents a different type of bacteria that can invade the body and cause infection. http://www.pneumo.com/physician/html/disease/serotypes/serotypes.asp This has a graphic of the serotype prevalence and other information. Guest guest
Ursula, Thanx for the web site. What I discovered is that in the pneumovax, there are 7 of the most prevalent serotypes also. What I don't understand is why my son's levels would decline such as: serotype (ST) 4 pre-titers were 0.4 with post- titers at 0.19, (ST) 6B pre was 2.0 with Post being 0.88 (ST) 9V pre was 1.7 and post was 2.08 (ST) 14 pre was 3.5 post was 1.79 and on and on. I would think that with the vaccine his levels would either increase or stay the same. Do you think the fact that his numbers decreased is any indication of his ability to fight infection? Or more importantly, does this indicate that IVIG is necessary?
