Just be consistent with however you measure so you can see changes. The changes are the important part. Get the measuring tape out too -- this has been FAB for me. Although I'm bummed about the 1 " loss on my chest...but I digress. Anyway, I too, got the tart reference. Very dry, nice & subtle. (geez, sounds like I'm describing a vintage chardonnay). I'd use 2 methods to track a downward trend. Either the calipers or the infrared and one of the online calculators. I'm using an online calculator and calipers. If you want a precise reading, get one, and compare to your calipers, infrared, and online calculator the same day.
