In essence the Apractis Onebox account works like any other online fax

service. & nbsp; I know a lot of docs are out there are using them and I haven't

heard of anyone needing business associate agreements in order to use

them. & nbsp; I just gave my onebox number out as my fax number and didn't worry

about it. & nbsp; Anyone else using online faxing services have any similar

issues? & nbsp; BTW, just downloaded the latest AC version. & nbsp; The new

illustration functions & nbsp;are pretty slick!

I'm not using Apractis, at least not yet. But I am using Onebox.com. I

have a single phone line for calls and faxes and have all of them

automatically go to onebox.com where they are split for VM and fax. My VM

message gives my urgent phone number (my cell) if someone needs to reach

me right away. Otherwise folks are asked to leave a message which I catch

up to throughout day.

For sending faxes, I use onebox.com for everything. I have no stand-alone

faxer. To send out faxes I type in a number in the " to " box (ie-

), write whatever text I want and attach any file to be sent.

It sends it without a problem.

I would assume Apractis can do the same with faxes. But Janice's note

suggests I'd need a stand-alone fax machine. Anyone know the low down on

the issue.

You absolutely don't need a fax machine. & nbsp; I am now using the exact same

onbox system you are using, with the exception of outgoing faxes. & nbsp; I just

use the fax modem on my computer. & nbsp; This allows you to use Windows fax

services with any of the programs on your computer. & nbsp; The fax modem

application is grouped with your printers. & nbsp; When you select " print " for any

document in the file menu, you just select your fax machine icon instead of the

default printer. & nbsp; Windows starts a short faxing wizard where you plug in

the fax number, add a cover sheet, and presto, you are done. & nbsp; You can

monitor the progress of the fax from the toolbar and you actually hear the

ringing and the fax modem pick up on the other line through the computer

speakers. & nbsp; I found that faxing through onebox was a bit tedious, because of

the time uploading the attached file to the onebox server. & nbsp; I also found

that faxing requisitions, scripts, progress notes, and consultant letters from

AC works failry seamlessly since AC has printer functions all over it. & nbsp; In

other words, everywhere AC has a print function, think of it as a fax function

just by selecting the computer's fax modem. & nbsp; One other thing. & nbsp; I don't

maintain a second phone line for the fax machine. & nbsp; I just used a splitter

and ran one line to the fax modem. & nbsp; With my low volume, I don't run into

trouble, especially using the onebox voicemail functions. & nbsp; There have just

been a couple of instances when I went to pick up the phone and forgot I was

sending a fax. & nbsp; I just had to hang up the phone, my fax was not disrupted,

and either wait or use my cell phone to make the call.

How are you faxing consult letters from AC using onebox? & nbsp; Do you have to

save the letter somewhere else, address in onebox and then add the document as

an attachment? & nbsp; I didn't realize you could plug in the fax number in the

" to " line and send a fax on onebox. & nbsp; That is at least a little faster than

using the onebox fax wizard, but you don't have the option of sending a cover

letter. & nbsp; I am curious to hear how it works for you. & nbsp; I might be using

the wrong system.

I probably should have just told the hospital, " Here's my new fax number. "

Instead, I went into greater detail than necessary and now I'm having to

deal with

the hospital's attorneys and HIPPA committee. They are definitely

Thanks. A lot to think about and consider changes in how I do things.

For " cover letters " I basically print my last note so the specialist is

getting past medical history, social history, etc., and my assessment and

plan about the problem being referred for. I scribble a couple more notes

or put stars next to the important paragraphs to direct the specialist's

attention. And then I scan it so that it's filed in my patient's document

tree which I actually keep separate from AC. Then I go to Onebox, attach

the document, type in the fax number and on the Onebox message screen type

in a few sentences like, " see below for information regarding Mrs. 's

referral to Dr. for such and such a problem. " I then send message

demographic information I have printed from AC as well as any labs or

other reports altogether. I then attach the whole package to my Onebox

fax and have future reference to exactly what I sent along and when I sent

it. With my dating system, he he and all files are kept in chronological

order.

So far it's working for me. But I am always confident there is a better

way to do things, so you have my attention with what you have been

describing for Apractis.

Thanks. A lot to think about and consider changes in how I do things.

For " cover letters " I basically print my last note so the specialist is

getting past medical history, social history, etc., and my assessment and

plan about the problem being referred for. I scribble a couple more notes

or put stars next to the important paragraphs to direct the specialist's

attention. And then I scan it so that it's filed in my patient's document

tree which I actually keep separate from AC. Then I go to Onebox, attach

the document, type in the fax number and on the Onebox message screen type

in a few sentences like, " see below for information regarding Mrs. 's

referral to Dr. for such and such a problem. " I then send message

and in a couple minutes in e-mail back from Onebox telling me if the fax

was sent successfully are not. So, it is multistep but I can't be sure

that any method is clearly better or not.

tim, all of the additional information you're sending to the specialist should easily be included in the letter using voice recognition, template or if fast, typing. in addition, you're creating more work for yourself, and using up paper, and potentially risk misinterpretation of your handwritten notes. to refer to a specialist, i send an internal email to my assistant, in AC. i have a template under the patient notes section letter writer, and she inserts the key words i want in the referral letter. the letter, chart note and patient demographics are then faxed directly from within AC. although referrals are supposed to be automatically saved into AC's imported items when printed, my assistant manually saves the letter and chart note into the patient's folder once they are faxed. i don't know if the items are now saved into the imported items folder

after faxing, since AC used to not see faxing as equivalent as printing regarding importation. it would also be simpler if the letter writer function faxed/printed the referral letter and chart note with the demographics included, rather than having to send the demos separately. from what i understand, all of this should integrate without any difficulty into apractis, with or without a fax machine. Great points Larry.

The " notes " I add are things like " pt being ref'd to Dr. and will

call for appt " , not anything clinically important. I do star the

important paragraphs as I don't think any doc will read the whole note to

find the couple pertinent pieces for their visit. This is a case where I

may not mind using more paper for possible improved quality of care... I

like to say that in my office I still use paper, I just don't keep paper.

Your points about templates are good too. Improving my use of templates,

in both AC and Dragon, are high on my priority list now. Making and using

them, along with some changes in my methods (for faxing, etc) could save

time. Plus I need to go back and " play with " AC more to see what it can

do. When I started with it 5 months ago I didn't really like the

letter/fax functions and it didn't seem to keep track of what I was

sending.

Finally, I gotta wonder if Apractis may help.

We all chose Amazing Charts because it was simple and cost effective. & nbsp; We

have all created our personal " work-arounds " to the limitations imposed by not

buying all of the " bells and whistles " in an expensive EMR. & nbsp; I can see

where folks might be hesitant to adopt the Apractis program, because it forces

people to re-design their personal system. & nbsp; Once I saw what Apractis would

do for my workflow and save me some money to boot, it was a no-brainer. & nbsp; I

ended up switching my email over to onebox, I eliminated my second telephone

line, and now just have the onebox number for voice and fax. & nbsp; these changes

happend at the same time I moved my office location so it went pretty

smoothly. & nbsp; It seems like a never ending process of adaptation as new

features come out and new technology becomes available. & nbsp;

I am afraid I don't have any experience with e-scripts. I have been using amazing charts without it for a year. I typically run medication multichecks through epocrates when I have a concern. ditto. i fax prescriptions directly from AC to pharmacies, except, of course for C-2's (controlled drugs), which are printed directly from AC to tamper-proof paper, sequentially numbered, which i record in the chart. in AC's prescription writer, there is a direct connection to epocrates on the internet, and there are two epocrates versions-- free, and premium. i use the free one, which gives me access to all the drug information i need, including med checks for interactions, and adverse and side effects, and dosing. whichever one chooses, access merely requires a logon and password, which means that one has to register, easy to do. i don't think one has to log on more than once a day (if using the same computer), even though one may pull multiple charts and look up information through the prescription writer in different patient's charts. i'm not clear

on why escripts is even necessary. does it provide an electronic clearinghouse database for drug companies? insurance companies? big brother? someone? to keep track of our prescribing habits? it's no longer "knowledge is power", rather "information is power". You said Apractis has really saved you time and I'm trying to figure out how-- is it simply a matter of fewer clicks per item reviewed, commented on and relayed to pt? That does sound good. Also, have you used the new feature that puts scanned items into the same in box? I seem to scan so much.
