The best insulators are hay bales ... if you set some in a square, and

put an old window over them, you'll get a nicely heated interior

during the day. BTW there are lots of folks renovating houses

this time of year, and the contractors just toss out the old windows,

which are great for cold frames etc.

I've also read that at one point people had " straw boxes " which were lined

with straw, and hot rocks were put in the bottom, then the

pot of whatever it was they wanted to cook. I suspect that one

could make a box within a box, lined with straw (or fiberglass or

whatever insulation comes to hand), and set a warm pot of

milk in it, and it would stay hot enough for the time it takes

to make yogurt.

(I'm not a yogurt expert though, I'm still into kefir, the lazy side

of me comes to the fore!).
