HI Steve....

Welcome to the List and BFL! I'll answer the questions below that I can be

of help with.

I work out at home and have these freeweights:

2 bars

2 sets of threaded dumbells

a pyramid set of dumbells from 2 to 5 pounds (I only occassional use the 5#

now.. my kids use the little ones ;)

an ez curl bar

a stand for the ez curl bar hubs made (for preacher curls).

2 benches (I could live with one, I ended up with 2 when I bought my stamina

machine)

I also have the stamina machine mentioned above. It uses regular weights

and a pulley/cable system.

about 400 pounds of weights

Here's what I feel is the bare necessities:

a bar

set of dumbells (threaded ones take longer to change up, but are cheap).

a bench (one that incline/declines would be best).. one with leg extension

on it would be a bonus. You can pick one up at a garage sale any more for

$10-$25. Ppl tend to quit using them. *grin*

and at least 200# of weights.. depending on how much you can bench/squat. I

got 250# of weights at a garage sale for $10. Talked em down from $20. :)

Also, walmart has weights for a pretty reasonable price. I got the stamina

machine (not top of the line but works great for home) for $58... on

clearance... regular $140

Sheesh.. that was the short answer *pant pant*

Easy access to the " right " foods. (get rid of the crap in your cabinets that

aren't bfl).

I like my treadmill (which is about to die)... I think I'll be getting a new

treadmill and hopefully a recumbant bike too.

My workouts are strictly at home and I've been doing

this for about 17 weeks.

You'd need a bench and dumbbells. My weights go from 5

lbs. up to 25 lbs. but you may need heavier ones.

Actually, I use our picnic bench with a towel as my

bench. We also have a small Body Solid machine that

has leg extension part, bicep/row bar, and the pull

down bar. Between that and the dumbbells I get a

pretty good workout.

Set your goals, write them down, read them every day

and plan! You need to keep focused on why you're doing

BFL. When I started I kept a binder of my workout

sheets, my goals and my before picture - that was a

lot of motivation for me.

That's a hard one and I haven't faced that yet. The

only other cardio I've done at home besides running is

Tae-Bo (not intense enough for me) and jumping rope.

I'm looking into getting one of those wheel trainers

to turn my mountain bike into a stationary bike.

Hi, Steve,

I started working out at home, but quickly out grew the weights. I

then went to one local gym and out grew those weights. They had a

leg press machine that only went up to 160lbs. I had that thing

conquered in days. LOL My DH got me a lifetime membership to a gym

for our anniversary. Is that true love or what?

Our home equipment is now in our son's room. But we started with a

good quality bench with a preacher bench, leg ext, lat pulls, and a

cage. Bought a barbell (not olympic) and some weights, and dumbbells

from 1-45 lbs. Those lowers weights come in handy for my daughters,

who like to workout, and I use them to strengthen my rotator cuff. I

bought all this at a resale shop, Play it Again. I spent less than

$200.

Set goals. Write them down. Read them everyday. Plan your meals,

and report back to us with triumps/tragedies. We are a great group

of people to help you remain accountable. No one will bash you if

you fall off the wagon, but you'll get some encouragment and maybe a

poke in the eye from Lana, and a good swift leg press from me. LOL

I have hardware in my left knee. Total blow out of the patella

playing basketball. I ride a bike. I have an exercise bike here at

home with resistance levels that guess where I bought? You got it,

the resale shop for $30. I saw one at a garage sale last week for

$10! I have a mountain bike and ride that outside every chance I

get. Since I go to the gym, I now use the ellitical.

I work out at home. I have a Body Solid Power Rack and bench with an

Olympic barbell set. I also have a Weider machine, but don't get

much use out of it since I have outgrown it for a lot of exercises.

Probably will get rid of it within a year. I have an extra older

bench since there are sometimes two of us working out at the same

time at it comes in handy. Also have a couple extra regular barbells

which come in handy for two people. Then I have 4 sets of dumbells

that we use regularly.

I enjoy doing elliptical for cardio inside and it isn't hard on the

knees at all. Used to have a treadmill, but like the elliptical

better for indoors.

Don't have any experience with Parabody. Everyone had their own way

of sticking with the program. For me, seeing results, feeling better

has been incentive enough. Even if I quit exercising for a week, I'd

still pretty much stick to BFL eating since I like it and like the

way I feel while eating this way. Don't be too hard on yourself if

you miss a few workouts, just keep going. This is for life and life

can give us unexpected situations that we have to make the best of.

My in-laws gave me a NordicTrac and I like it. My husband hates it. If you try a NordicTrac, play with one lots first.

I have tons of workout equipment at home. I didn't really start working out until I joined a gym. Oh yeah, it can be done very successfully, but I find that having a place to go is more motivating. Silly little things will distract me at home and I don't get the intensity.

However....your mileage may vary.

I work out at home mostly too, and can't really add anything to the

equipment suggestions you have received here as they cover pretty

much everything. :) One thing I can tell you is that I used to run

about 20-30 miles per week way back when and had to stop due to knee

problems. I didn't run at all for about 7 years. Since I started

BFL a year ago, I have found that my knees can handle running again -

all the supporting muscles are much stronger from the weight

workouts. Not sure exactly what your knee prob is, but if it is just

a matter of muscle strengthening, BFL is the way to go. Good luck on

your program and keep us updated!

I used to have some knee problems too about 13 years ago. I then

started doing some weight lifting between then and when I started BFL

and the knee problems have totally disappeared.

That'll work. Looks cool. Did you get oly adapters for your leg

attachment and your pulley system. It look like it was set up for

standard weights. The adapters are great in that the weights fit

nicely on the bar instead of dangling. Can you use your pulley system

by itself as a stand alone or does it need to be attached to the

bench? All the little stuff adds up, doesn't it. I can't beleive

they made the saftey bars an option. At least it's not as bad as

buying a boat. With that, every time I wanted add something like make

the boat 2 foot longer (it grew twice) or get a bigger motor (this

changed three times), it seemed to add another thousand. Which I

found out that's what BOAT means.... Bring On Another Thousand.

Just an FYI, Steve, if you are entering the challenge, you need to

take regular pictures too. Digital pictures are frowned upon. It's

in the rules.

I must have missed this. Did they say WHY they're frowned upon? If you're going to alter a pic you can do it just as easily if you scan in a pic taken with a 35mm. I guess it wouldn't even make sense for us to send in our pics for this challenge with that in mind.

Once scanned it becomes a digital image....so it is not accepted. But as

someone said, its the afters they are more concerned about.
