Hi,

We had an interesting article in the Sunday paper today that I thought I would

share with everyone.

CLEANING PRODUCTS LINKED TO ASTHMA

Household cleaning products could give children asthma, experts have warned.

Exposure to such chemicals early in ife may trigger the condition, making

youngsters four times as likely to become sufferers.

A study of almost 200 toddlers showed that those exposed to fumes found in

cleaning items, polishes and room fresheners ran the highest risk.

The pollutants, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also found in

soplvents, paint, floor adhesives, fitted carpets and cigarette smoke.

The study examined 88 children with asthma and 104 without. The level of VOCs

in all the childrens homes were assessed twice, in winter and summer.

The levels of indoor VOCs were much higers in the homes of children with asthma.

Dr Krasso Rumchev of Curtin Univ. of Technology in Perth said: " Exposure to the

fumes emitted from solvents and cleaning products at home may increase the risk

of childhood asthma. "

Benzene appeared to pose the highest risk, followed by ethylbenz and toluene.

Dr. Rumchev said taht although the study was small, it supported a theory that

exposure to pollutants early on could be important in the development of asthma.

Regards Nerida

My mother breastfed me and I still have nightmare allergies and had worms as

a child! I believe the reason for the increase is due to all the fragrances

and chemicals poured into the environment now but big chemical companies don't

want this to be a reason as they will lose money. Just think of the tons of

antihistamines etc everyone gulps down during ragweed season. Alice

Excuse me pjb but you do NOT get on here smarting off like that. If someone needs to talk about a problem or just wants to talk about their day, that is exactly what this list is for. We listen and offer advice or help as needed. If someone needs to talk, let them talk. It helps for me to be able to release stresses of the day to people who understand and will not be critical. We don't want posts like this to run off the people who come here for help and solace. Also, the cayce, yoga, new agey, faith healing stuff you are spouting is extremely confusing. I honestly don't know how much of that will help, but it is a free list unless someone else complains. I am moderator of Asthma2 and would rather not see that there. Some of it is good, like the stuff about pollution and pollen, but some of it is not. I guess I am more traditional. Look, I tried a "healing service" type thing in a church once. I have all the faith in the world that God could heal me if He saw fit, but He

had other plans. I will pray for anyone who asks but only in God's will. I do not believe it is right to tell people to go and do all this alternative healing stuff and put themselves in danger not taking their meds because some desperate people will believe it, do it, and die from it. Colonics, what the heck does that have to do with asthma? I'm sorry, but I've seen enough of the cayce junk ok. Now let's talk about asthma. Angel I hope you are feeling much better. The pollen and humidity will make me crazy. Thank goodness you can get by with the nebulizer twice in a day. I use mine every few hours. My asthma is highly allergic so I know how that is. It seems like every year something different sets me off. Take care, pjb12345uk wrote:

This is actually the first time that something in the air has set my asthma

off. Then again, my previous asthma episodes were weather related with the

snow.

Hi ,

Peoples' asthma can change. My dr told me that mine changes a little every year. I won't be bothered by something one year and just about die from it the next. I have become sensitive to grass, some flowers, some trees, some molds, extremely dusty environments, and cold air, along with too much humidity when it's hot. It is hard for me to always pin down what is bothering me, so I try to deal with it. It is impossible to avoid all triggers as much as we would all like to. Take care, B wrote:
