Guest guest
I have been concentrating on the thyroid/adrenal combo for several weeks now and a penny dropped last night. I was with a friend last night whose 13 year old son has autism. Practically every family member on his side has dyslexia interestingly enough. He didn't give any details but he felt that IBS played an important role in autism. In light of Nicola's emails last night I looked up IBS and serotonin and sure enough there was a strong connection. I had forgotten all about this. Eighty % of serotonin is in the gut according to Gershon 'The Second Brain'. Here's some info on the connection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irritable_bowel_syndrome And now then, I remembered that apparently the thyroid controls serotonin AND calcium metabolism, to what extent I don't know . Three very important components to the thyroid are: 1. Iodine, 2. Selenium and 3. Tyrosine. I am sure there is a problem in getting enough iodine here in the UK. It's the only Western country which does NOT automatialy iodize salt. the Food standards people told me that the main iodine sources in british food were fish ( not every can eat fish regularly due to high cost and personal tastes), iodine in milk due to prtactice of cleaning teats with iodine so some of it is absorbed in milk. Using iodine is not obligatory and local farmer tells me that using iodine is not always paracticed in dairy milking. the other source is cattle feed which I have not looked into yet. Now then, iodine content in the soil is very low in Northern and Scotland. A common thyroid problem called Derbyshire Neck was widespread in the last century but adding iodin ein the water resolved this problem. Picture of poor afflicted soul here: http://www.peaklandheritage.org.uk/index.asp?peakkey=10300521 (But then the smart council people added in fluoride which would have negated this effect presumably) So we know there are problems with iodine provision here in the UK coupled with the low salt recommendations from government means even if you thought about iodized salt, you would have erred on the side of caution anyway by low dosing on it when it probably should have been more generous. A problem with iodine dficiency is that beta-carotene will not convert to Vitamin A effectively (high Vitamin A =low measles) And what happens when you have the MMR in light of a problem converting beta-carotene to vitamin A I leave to your imagination!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyroid http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez So in short I am wondering whether a thyroid problem is causing a serotonin problem which is causing a gut problem It is well known that an underative thyroid is associated with constipation, so slowing down of gut..... Bathing in chlorine water will displace the important iodine. Sorry for the higgeldy piggeldy...just wanted to get my thoughts down so we can have a dicsussion and maybe help little Luke and all the bowel kids.
