Guest guest
E- Greetings: In your life if you have problems with perfumes and scents here is some information you might find of interest. Graeme Hamilton 21 June 2000. National Post HALIFAX - Fragrance industry officials yesterday visited ground zero in the battle against scented products, hoping to open a dialogue with their opponents and freshen their image. But any hope of rapprochement vanished the moment an anti-scent advocate pulled on her breathing mask after catching a whiff of one perfumed participant. " I'm allergic to a specific fragrance chemical. If something's got that chemical in it, then I am wheezing immediately, and one lady had on something with that chemical in it, " explained Betty Bridges, founder of the Virginia-based Fragrance Products Information Network. " My breathing capacity drops 30-50% within seconds. I'm so used to it, I never panic, " Ms. Bridges said. Fragrance opponents had asked organizers that the event be held in a scent-free room, but met with little sympathy. One corner of the small room was designated off-limits to the scented. " Since we reject the issue in the first place, that scented products are not safe, the best we could do was to try to make accommodation for the people who wanted that kind of environment, " said Low, the president of the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association. Mr. Low said he feels sorry for Ms. Bridges, but his industry is not to blame. " I've met with a number of people in Halifax who do in fact wear those kinds of masks routinely, and I find that a great tragedy. Person to person, it bothers me. I hate to see it, and I hope they're getting adequate medical attention for that problem. " The fragrance industry is fighting back as a growing number of schools, hospitals and government offices in Nova Scotia adopt scent-free policies. Mr. Low said the final straw was a complaint to the RCMP about a high school student who wore scented hair gel despite his teacher's chemical sensitivity. " There's no question that Halifax is the global hotspot, " he said. " We think it's important to get the information to the consumers and the policymakers here now before it does become something where we have to go to every market and do the same thing. " Canadian sales of perfumes are about $500-million a year, and when scented shampoos, deodorants and other toiletries are included, the total rises to $5-billion, Mr. Low said. The industry will be running newspaper advertisements starting on Saturday, ejecting claims that fragrances are hazardous and urging responsible use out of respect to " people who react excessively to many materials found in everyday life. " The ads advise people to keep their aromas within their " personal scent circle, " defined as an arm's length from the body. Albert Donnay, the director of MCS Referral and Resources in Baltimore, scoffed at the idea that strong scents can be contained within a small circle. " We've all been on elevators when someone walks on with a large cloud of perfume in their scent circle. When they leave the elevator, they don't always take that cloud with them, " he said. B. Lehrer, Ph.D., FAAAAI from Tulane University Medical Center investigated asthmatics for their responses to fragrances. Of the 77 adult asthmatics completing a questionnaire, 77 percent indicated they were allergic to fragrance. Of the 38 fragrances identified as causing reactions, the top six were Red, White Diamonds, Giorgio, Charlie, Opium and Poison.
