>> You see, the drugs are slow (?) death for addicts, while they may be

pain relief for chronic pain patients

Well then, with intractable severe pain, which has not diminished with

alternative methods, what is a PERSON with addictive disease to do? I

think a doctor can usually find out if a person has a condition that

causes such pain... but if not, the person is in real trouble....

My point before was, people in pain, whether addicted or not, should not

be treated with disrespect by healthcare professionals. Disrespect and

arrogant assumptions lacking understanding and compassion cause people

in real pain to have to straight out lie about being addicted, to get

any relief. If it ever comes to that, I don't know what I'd do. Some

people, desperate, committed to addiction recovery fr many years, have

had to keep changng drs. to get adequate pain relief, and are

additionally guilt-tripped by the addiction recovery community. Talk

about suicidal double-binds!

That's why I have to be unemployed and live like I do (seen as a

" slacker " ), to manage my pain without medications. Is this validated in

any way? No, it is not. Like many, I'm fortunate enough not to be out

on the street (so far). And my radical lifestyle changes have helped

with the pain management, but most chronic pain sufferers seem to

consider THAT discussion anathema, too.

All the same, I'm very sympathetic to ANYONE with chronic pain. Just

wanted to give a reminder about all those people not included in your

discussion here, and rendered invisible. If you're able to take meds

for relief, that is at least something for which to be grateful.

Just, please, if you ever see staff in a dr.'s office or hospital

treating with contempt someone who's in pain but addicted, just think

twice... they could be anyone (we never know if that's down the pike)...

maybe remind the person who's treating them that way, if you can, that

no one in pain deserves that, even if addicted. You see, pain and

addiction are not necessarily mutually exclusive, either, as your words

(quoted above) seemed to suggest. Thanks!:-)
