OK, OK now I understand. I am a dianosauer, part of the early age

of computers. When people started communicating on the internet about some

topic, it was called, and actually was, a mailing list. Then servers got

into the act to make it easier, but the " list " moniker stuck until very

recently where, with the coming of chat and the huge diversity of " mailing

list groups " people have recognized things like what we're doing here as

" groups " in the social & support sense.

It is interesting that we began this group on OneList, a free

" list " server; and now are continuing along in eGroups. That's progress.

All along I have wanted people to recognize the reality of being a social

group, as opposed to a bunch of people trading information; like on some

abstract technical subject.

Hi Jules,

What is hurting me is a very good question. It goes further than

what's my problem, or particular physical problem. I have a spinal

arthritic condition called ankylosing spondylitis that is about 35 years

advanced. Basically, there is some breakdown of the spine & arthritic

deposits outside & inside. Activity is important, but inflames my back. 2

edged sword- activity builds muscles that compensate for problems with the

spine. I also have flares similar to rheumatoid arthritis. Have gotten very

good medical care & surgery to help me keep active.

Now for the hurting part. My disability caused me to lose a career

in rehabilitation & planning psychiatric services. There was family breakup

too Those things, particularly family, are constant pain worse than the

physical. I moved to Vegas because I am much better off physically in the

climate. Problems kept my family from coming too as planned, & that was the

beginning of the end.

So far as work, had to completely rethink what I could do & how I

could do it. Then some medications made me unexpectedly better. so now I am

faced with some conservative things I started (web-related business) and

some more aggressive & demanding options. I am also a professional

photographer. Got my gear together & started soliciting jobs in last few

months. I weighed the counseling vs. photography. My conclusion was that

photography was more physically manageable. I can schedule jobs, then plan

sufficient crash time. In Counseling, I would have too much regularity to

deal with, at least for now. And the photography (weddings) offers greater

up-front income potential, as well as much more social exposure, so I would

meet more people. Have been very isolated for years.

Since no one has given me a windfall of cash to finance anything,

I am trying to use web work to generate advertising money for photography.

But I may luck out without having to spend much on advertising. My first 2

weddings are for casino workers (1/3 of the residents of Vegas work in

casinos) I may just be able to promote to casino workers just by handing

out cards with freebies at my weddings & getting some signs up at employee

bulletin boards.

Oh, I forgot to include that I am consulting as a rehabilitation

counselor on a current SSD appeal. Just a few things to keep busy; but a

bit too scattered for my tastes. I suppose this will eventually work itself

out.
