What are your hospitals doing with placentas after mom is discharged?

Some hospitals I worked in tossed them as red bagged medical waste while others allowed them to be picked up by medical research companies at no cost. But I heard that was stopped years ago by the Dept. of Health Services and Joint Commission to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV.

Would like to know what is currently being done around the US.
