I think all arguments for dehorning, debeaking (poultry), tail docking

(pigs,

dogs), cropping ears, tail-bobbing (horses), declawing (cats, wild animals),

de-fanging (wild animals in captivity), nose-ringing (hogs) and other

mutilations (I hate big floppy ear tags and notching too) are not only an

excuse for poor management, they are a bad habit holdover from a

Capricornian era, and, more importantly, they are a crime against MOTHER

NATURE.

.....................................

Please let us not let this wonderful list be taken over by animal rights

types.

I know that normal everyday animal mangement can be barbaric to those who

get their milk out of the refridgerator at the grocery store, or their meat

in styrofoam containers at Wallmart, but many of the procedures are very

simply facts of life on the farm.

A kid that is disbudded before it is a week old, quickly takes it's bottle

and moves on with life. This same kid with horns gets it's head stuck in

every fence, which in the heat of Texas can mean death if I don't catch her

in time, she is also a danger to her herdmates, horns can and will destroy

udders.

Sorry I would not want to deal with my goats everyday, twice a day, up close

and personal with them having horns. Is hoof trimming to painful to do? Is

it too chilly for them to have a dairy shave? Is it to cosmically painful

to have your kids taken away at birth, so I should let the kids nurse all

the milk out and not have any for sale? Should they not be penned so the

dogs and coyotes can eat them?

Sorry Old Will, but you are a vet as much as I am...I play one on the

internet :) Vicki
