Guest guest
Thinks it might be bowel pain - years ago Luke would get cramping pains when his stomach was in a really bad way - waking in the night screaming in pain. >>When I Have colitis I could scream, been a real eye opener to what these poor kids go through. The peristalsis in bowel means in 'normal' people it would move twice per day, that's when the pain comes, I'd rather give birth, there is no way to relieve it, Oxypowder chased with Sacc B helps me, if its really bad Colldial Silver seems to calm down the inflammation. Are his poops coming out a bit flat? When mine is bad it looks they have been ironed or as Caz puts it snake poops ( gets them), thin like your little finger, like the wall of bowel is swollen and there is less diameter for it to get through Mandi x
Guest guest
Nicola, Did the doctor eliminate other problems, such as appendicitis? Was an x-ray taken? Severe stomach pain should be taken very seriously by the doctor, esp if a child cannot communicate the exact location and type of pain. Are there any other signs? Frequent urination? Lack of appetite? Nausea? Anita > > Hi > > My son Luke has been suffering from very bad stomach pains for the last 3 days. Guest guest
Hi I have just returned from the doctors again and the urine test was negative, which means no infection. Doctor ruled out appendicitis as no fever, nausea, no loss of appetite and the pain does come and go. I had given Luke neurofen before we went to the doctors as he woke up again crying with pain, so when he was examined he did seem fine! Thinks it might be bowel pain - years ago Luke would get cramping pains when his stomach was in a really bad way - waking in the night screaming in pain. Tonight I will try and flush him out with oxypowder to see if that helps. Had been half hoping that it was an urine infection so at least I knew what it was. I will just have to see how it goes - at the moment he seems okay. Thanks Nicola Re: Stomach Pain Nicola,Did the doctor eliminate other problems, such as appendicitis? Was an x-ray taken? Guest guest
Hi Nicola Is this a recent experience for your child? Would Luke have had bouts of stomach pains before? Has your doctor considered the possiblity of colitis, that he might have ulcers which are causing the problem? Guest guest
Also his stomach pains have just started again - he is in alot of pain and needed to go the toilet - he did long like thin snake poos. Oh god - does this mean it could be colitus? How do you treat it? Should I continue giving him neurofen? >>From my experience sounds like bowel is inflammed, not sure what to advise, they did tell me to take painkillers and that's all they said. Oxy, Sacc B, Silver knocks mine back quickly now I know what to do, first time 2 weeks of agony. Guest guest
Hi Pat / Mandi Thanks for comments. It is only 3 days ago that his stomach pains started - so yes recent. However when he was younger he would often wake in the night screaming in pain and on occasions in the day - have ended up in casualty on a couple of occasions as they were so bad. But that was 2-3 years ago and since has never had stomach pains. We know his gut is not in a great state as he has reoccuring yeast infections, but we have been gf/cf for last 5 years, SCD for 5 months and now low carb in the last 3-4 weeks. His diet has never been healthier, so can't understand why its happening now. His stools are long like soft sausage type - but are not very thin, however I haven't had a chance to see them in the last few days. He has just eaten lunch and I can tell his stomach is tender again and he seems to have bloated up. Doctor also said he was full of gas. Does this relate to collitus? Thanks Nic Re: Stomach Pain Hi NicolaIs this a recent experience for your child? Would Luke have had bouts of stomach pains before? Guest guest
I love this group!! Its so heartening to read stuff which fits your child exactly, especially if your child is non verbal and can't tell you what hurts. We saw Dr Fell at Xmas again and I told him that 's poo's are like snakes at the moment and flat too. We know he has ulceritive colitis from the procedures done . Dr Fell says that this is IBS as well as it shows a 'spastic rectum' which aint doing its job of moving things through. He said that with the colitis it is absolutely vital to keep the poo moving through as would be in agony if he got bunged up. Hearing what Mandi says about the pain she is in sometimes before going to the loo really rings true as cries and cries at times just before a bowel movement occurrs. It all makes so much sense. So Nicki, I would certainly use Movicol if you are not already to keep things moving gently. I hope Luke feels better soon. Guest guest
Hi me again I have just had another thought - not sure if it is relevant but Luke has been on a biofilm protocol as advised by Dr Usman and he has the following every day and has done for the last 5 weeks: On empty stomach - 1 tsp apple cyder vinegar, 2 candex and 9 drops of bio-chelat 15 minutes later - 1 yeast aid and 1 GSE 1 hour later - truefibre - a fibre drink Do you think perhaps any of this could be too harsh on his stomach. He has always been a boy who has been very sensitive to foods and supplements. Also his stomach pains have just started again - he is in alot of pain and needed to go the toilet - he did long like thin snake poos. Oh god - does this mean it could be colitus? How do you treat it? Should I continue giving him neurofen? Nicola Nicola Re: Stomach Pain Hi NicolaIs this a recent experience for your child? Would Luke have had bouts of stomach pains before? Guest guest
Henry's very bloated at the moment - on Tuesday morning he was sick 6 times, so I assumed the norovirus was to blame. He also has an intermittent fever. This morning he was sick again - it looked like yesterday's lunch (sorry for gruesome detail). He obviously has a virus. He is swollen and not pooing much. even with a suppository, so I assume his gut is inflamed by the virus. Perhaps your child has caught an infectious illness and this is affecting the gut? I'm getting ill now as well, but it seems to be affecting me differently - aching joints and trips to the loo. (Of course I could have something entirely different to Henry.) Henry has become very very stimmy with this illness. I know some children improve when fighting fever, but not him - wonder what this might mean, btw. Guest guest
Hi Mandi Thanks. He looks awful at the moment, lying on the floor, very pale, obviously in pain (despite high pain threshold) I think I will give him some neurofen to see if that helps. I have decided to go back to 100% SCD and for next couple of days just give him chicken broths and soups etc and minumum supps of only enzymes and probs - hopefully that will help the inflammation. I have emailed Dr Usman and asked for emergency telephone consultation - waiting to hear back from her. Thanks again Mandi Nic Re: Re: Stomach Pain In a message dated 09/01/2009 14:15:03 GMT Standard Time, n.trotmanntlworld writes: Also his stomach pains have just started again - he is in alot of pain and needed to go the toilet - he did long like thin snake poos. Guest guest
Hi Nic, Ive joined at last!! Soz to hear about Luke! Im gonna copy and paste from http://www.thoughtfulhouse.com/0405-conf-akrigsman.htm If GI symptoms persist, the ASD child needs a full evaluation, including a very careful history, a physical exam, and baseline screening tests. If those are normal, and temporary, empiric use of drugs like Zantac, Prevacid, Tums, or motility drugs do not alleviate the symptoms, then the above diagnoses should be considered, and it becomes essential to look at the mucosa of the GI tract. If a gastroenterologist dismisses the symptoms as " behavioral " —expected in a child on the spectrum—then the parents should find another gastroenterologist. I wonder if its worth a shot at Gavison(although goodness knows I havnt read the label to see whats in it!!)Could it be reflux? Ella has had ongoing probs, but blow me, this week I took her off all laxitive, magnesium citrate and oxypowder included and just gave her prune juice and added Zyme Prime into Trienza enzymes and bang a poo everyday with a great consistency, instead of bloaty tummy and the squits! Gonna have to watch for yeast now though! > > Nicola, > > I have a whole drawer with homeopathy plus the herbal extract for > digestive system that I can drop over to you this evening! > > > > Nicola schrieb: > > > > Hi Mandi > > > > Thanks. > > > > He looks awful at the moment, lying on the floor, very pale, obviously > > in pain (despite high pain threshold) > > > > I think I will give him some neurofen to see if that helps. > > > > I have decided to go back to 100% SCD and for next couple of days just > > give him chicken broths and soups etc and minumum supps of only > > enzymes and probs - hopefully that will help the inflammation. > > > > I have emailed Dr Usman and asked for emergency telephone consultation > > - waiting to hear back from her. > > > > Thanks again Mandi > > > > Nic > > > > > > * Re: Re: Stomach Pain > > > > In a message dated 09/01/2009 14:15:03 GMT Standard Time, > > n.trotman@... writes: > > > > Also his stomach pains have just started again - he is in alot > > of pain and needed to go the toilet - he did long like thin > > snake poos. Guest guest
Hi Nicola Its a terrible shame that Luke is so poorly. One thing that I thought of when I read your post was parasites. Parasitic infections often produce lots of bloating especially after eating and lots of gas. Would it be possible to have a stool test done? Also if you have recently introduced a new diet (sorry didnt read every post recently) then this may be responsible. You mentioned going low carb with SCD what does that mean if you dont mind me asking? Do you mean the carbs in veg which are allowed? If so maybe he is in ketosis and his body is not coping with that, just a thought. Another point which I am sure someone may have mentioned is the winter vomiting virus. Cameron and I had this for a few weeks before Xmas and I wasnt really that sick but the nausea and the stomach pain was terrible, especially after eating. Just a thot. I hope Luke is better today. If I were you I would go back to a very basic diet of scrambled eggs, pear puree, chicken broth, lots of water and just allow his digestive system to get a little break. (Of course I always think everything is bowel problems and I havent mentioned that at all but the usual things like reflux and colitis are possible too). Lotsa Luv, thinking of you. Guest guest
Hi Thanks everyone for your posts - really appreciate it. Well we took Luke to A & E this morning as he was still the same - lots of pain. We pushed for an x-ray and then the results showed he was completely loaded. The consultant said she would have never have guessed just how loaded and bunged up he was from examining as he was only slightly bloated and couldn't believe it when she saw the x-ray. Because of the severity of the loading she is sure the pain is from this and has prescribed movicol - which were are currently trying to convince Luke to drink!! So the message here is that although your child does not look massively bloated - they could still be completely loaded. For the last 2 months Luke's appetite has dropped off and will only eat if you put something in front of him but will never ask for food. I have been giving him a maintenance dose of oxypowder of 1 capsule a day - which obviously isn't enough. Though every couple of weeks I do give him 2-3 caps to flush him out - though again I now realise that although it looks as though I have flushed him out - I haven't. Doctor has recommended that I start by giving 2-4 sachets a movicol a day and then increase if not working. What are other people's experience's of using movicol? Does it work quickly? How much did you have to use? How do you know when you have got it all out etc? Just so relieved we know what it is. Nicola Re: Stomach Pain Hi NicolaIts a terrible shame that Luke is so poorly. If I were you I would go back to a very basic diet of scrambled eggs, pear puree, chicken broth, lots of water and just allow his digestive system to get a little break.(Of course I always think everything is bowel problems and I havent mentioned that at all but the usual things like reflux and colitis are possible too).Lotsa Luv, thinking of you.Carolinexx
Guest guest
Hi Nicola I am so pleased for you all that you now know what is wrong. When you described the flat, snake like poo's it sounded exactly like the conversation I had with Dr Fell a couple of weeks back. He said this is due to a 'spastic rectum' which doesn't move things along properly. He said that for children like this it is absolutely VITAL to keep things moving. If there is inflammation there (colitis) then the child will feel just dreadful. (aged 9yrs) is on daily dose of 2 sachets movicol but Dr Fell reckoned that wasn't enough. For the initial clear out you can go way higher...On the box it says for a 5 to 11 year old to start on day 1 with 4 sachets then increase by 2 sachets a day for 7 days by which time you are on 12 !! Really hopes he will start to feel better soon. Its worked wonders for and we haven't had the explosive stuff that we got with the oxypowder maintenance. Good luck and well done for finding this all out Helen xx > > Hi > > Thanks everyone for your posts - really appreciate it. > > Well we took Luke to A & E this morning as he was still the same - lots of pain. Guest guest
hi we have used movicol for my son who is 11. Dr Fell recommended that we use it long term as Jordan has a very lazy bowel and any hold ups in bowel movements make him very aggressive. We started on 8 adult sachet a day for a week plus 4 oxy powder and micralax when I felt he needed more help it takes a couple of days to get started. We are now 6 months later using 4 movicol and 2 oxypowder we have found this is just right and the aggression has gone. We stopped for a week because I thought it was giving him gripes, but then the agression came back as he was obviously loading up again. We are now back to the 4+ 2 which seems to be suiting and keeping him moving and a lot more settled. Hope this helps Mariella x
Guest guest
---Hi Nicola, I mix Jazzie's Movicol with her orange juice, and it works just as good. For us we get results within 2 days, but Jasmine is only mildly constipated at times, since we started SCD. Guest guest
Sorry Nicola just picked up this thread. HOrrible scary time!! No if he's really loaded Movicol is not that quick. We're still clearing Tom out (yes, really). in your shoes I'd start at 4 sachets minimum x 2 and build up. A lot of people don't like movicol and certainly it's not recommended for leaky gut - BUT it does work and in a way that is less dramatic and not spasmodic, which is a bonus. You need to give iwth plenty of water, some people give little and often adn you won't believe how much needs to come out. Fact is, you need to shift it and it will take a few days minimum. Reawlly interested to hear about carbs and constipation too. Tom went back to A and e on Tuesday - 8th visit. We were told that the pain was now related to his IBS and that his " perception of pain was differentW " . Really helpful that. So - glad it's loading as you can deal with that. It will take a few days, movicol doesn't really taste of much if you whisk it up in juice or water. Er - dont' plan any long term excursions - when he blows, he'll blow! Guest guest
--Hi Nicola, My son's x ray last week showed exactly that despite daily bms ,etc and no obvious stomach pains but tons of other signs of discomfort and distress. He is nearly 13 and we were told to do a clearout immediately over 3-4 days using 4,6,9 sachets and then down to 2 for maintenance. Guest guest
Hi Steph Thanks. Started with 5 sachets today and only one daily usual stool - so yes I will increase amount every day. Planning to keep him at home for next 2-3-4 day until we see really good clear out. I can't wait!! I did actually ask consultant today if there could be an impaction within the loaded stools and she said there was a possibility that there could be an impaction but we might just not be able to see it on the x-rays. I suppose as long as the stools keep coming we needn't worry! I mixed the movicol up in his juice later today and he didn't even notice. Thanks for all support everyone who has posted over the last few days - it has been really helpful. - I will look into the thyroid - the doctor did not suggest or even mention thyroid. Interesting about the sugar as Luke never has sugar - though I think I may try it tomorrow and see what happens. Thank again everyone Nicola x Re: Stomach Pain> > > Hi Nicola> Its a terrible shame that Luke is so poorly. One thing that I thought > of when I read your post was parasites. Guest guest
Hi Nicola Poor you guys! Hope that Luke is feeling a bit better today. We have used lots of Movicol and have sometimes found it to help and sometimes not to be very effective at shifting things along. We once used it at the max dose for around 3 weeks and then hurt her leg, we think she was climbing on top of a bed side table during the night. When we went to A & E the next day she had an x-ray of her hip and she was pretty loaded up. I was amazed! Also when we first started off down this road and we went to the Royal Free we were on Picolax every weekend for a few months, she was 4 years old, and when we saw the Consulatnt some months later there had been no improvement. Same thing with micolette rectal suppository things. After months of using. We were quite fortunate at one point after weeks of clearing out that the gastro did a second x-ray to check how things were going. Its not good having the 2 x-rays but for many of our children they just cant cope with being examined. At that time things were improved but still about 40% loaded. I think we were going on holiday or something and like Steph these holidays I had been in and out of A & E and to the Day Case Unit for days (to avoid staying in Hospital overnight). I was just so relieved something had shifted. Its so tough to see our kids like that but if you have a decent gastro then hopefully they follow it up. Thinking of you. Luv Caroline xxx (PS Make sure he drinks heaps as Movicol has an osmotic effect and works by drawing water into the bowel to propel things along. I imagine its quite painful til you shift that old stuff along a bit. We have sometimes noticed massive big bits when clearing out once had a tennis ball sized pooh which you couls see all the thin thin coils within, amazing!) PPS Sorry if you are eating your breakfast!
Guest guest
Hi Caroline That is really helpful. I am sure Luke has got a large hard stool blocking things at the moment as he has been this morning once but it was only diarhoa type stools and he is saying the poo is stuck. He has been to the toilet since then but nothing is coming out. I am sure it is painful although he is saying it isn't as he still walking round hunched. He was also awake again in the night with the pain. We gave hom 5 movicol yesterday and plan to give him 7 today. I am also going to try a little prune juice and brown sugar today and I also gave oxypowder last night so hopefully that will help. I am really hoping for an explosion soon so the pain will go. If things don't move in the next couple of days I might take him back. The consultant did say that if things don't improve there is the option of an enema which is not very pleasant but does do the trick - is this what you mean by rectal suppository? I am not under the gastro, I used to be, but he was so useless that I gave up with him. I am going to ask my GP to ask him to refer him to me though and try again as it may be useful in these situations. Thanks Nic Re: Stomach Pain Hi NicolaPoor you guys!
