Hi,

Has anyone tried using l-thianine with their children? Any positive or

Also any feedback on 5htp appreciated.

Thanks,

Jane

we use VRP brand, from Nutricentre

chose it over ‘just’ l-theanine because we were very keen on green tea for its other constituents, like Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) (neuroprotective, I don’t think it would be present in l-theanine purified form). Also all the antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects were studied with green tea as a whole, not only l-theanine, so we thought it may be worth getting it through the full supplement...

we have not tried 5hpt. We do use GABA but only now and then, not every day. I think it does help slightly but I'm a bit uneasy using it full on long term

natasa

Hi,

What brand do you use and where from ? Its been recommended to me as the next step after gaba plus and then to add in 5htp. Do you use 5htp?

No neither have I, don’t get me wrong as not meaning to put you off GABA ... It is just me probably but I somehow ‘feel’ the same way re most things that the body itself should be synthesising, sort of prefer to find ways to enable the body to do it itself, whenever possible not to encourage it to rely on outside source. This is just my instinct more than anything. On the other hand if it had been an instant big wow we would have continued frequent use.

natasa

Hi Natasa,

Thanks for the reply. I will get some from the Nutricentre. If you don't mind me asking. What are your concerns about gaba? I haven't read about any problems with it.

FWIW I've had a bad reaction to gaba and I know of a couple of kids

who have too. For me even a tiny amount, rather than being

inhibitory, behaved like an excitotoxin. It was awful.

I also thought gaba was unable to cross the Blood Brain Barrier. It

certainly crossed mine and in a flash, so either my BBB is damaged

(unsuprising), or perhaps I've got that bit wrong(even less

surprising).

Decided to find out why and discovered that in the first few months

of life Gaba is excitory, so perhaps if there's a developmental delay

issue it could be a problem. Also that the action of Gaba is

dependent on ion channels, so it might work differently, even have

the reverse effect, if there's an ion channleopathy. Isn't this

recognised as being so for some with ASD?

I can't find the Wiki page I used but this one gives some info

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-aminobutyric_acid

After a while I could tell theanine was starting to have the same

effect with me too. Again FWIW
