I'm one of the somebody else's: I wanted to be a nurse in early grade school but by high school I'd changed to accounting. I live in Indiana and wanted to go to college at either Vanderbuilt or in FL but my parents said no they would pay someplace with instate fees but not out of state or private school so I said fine I won't go anyplace so there!!! Well, I went to work in a factory that paid very well and met my husband then we had a baby (I was 20 by then and had taken a semester of community college for accounting) I had my daughter in July and it was the hottest one or record at the time and I saw those nurses rocking the babies in the nursery and said well, I can do THAT! (I had always said I'd have as many kids as I could afford and had been in charge of the church nursery from the time I was 13) well by 2 years latter I'd had 2 more kids and the factory I was at decided they were going to install computers and wanted everyone to take some tests given by the tech. college so I passed the tests that we were given 4 hours to take (I took in 45 minutes) and during the evaluation I was told I should do something else and I said I know...then I mentioned it to my parents and they said they still had my college fund saved so I went to the new nursing program at the tech college (I was in the 2nd ADN class). To make the long story short I wanted to do OB, Nursery or Peds so when I graduated there was 1 job in L & D, 2 in Peds and no nursery jobs locally so I got 1 of the peds jobs and did that for 5 years then went to home health peds visits for 4 years then there was finally a L & D job open so I've been doing that ever since and this is where I think I'll stay....even if I change hospitals or travel. In addition to my full time job I've worked per diem at another hospital and taught OB/peds clinicals for a few years now for a different community college. Guest guest
For me I finished my consolidation in Labour and delivery and knew from then it was a fit for me. At the time they were not hiring on that unit so I went to work on a surgical floor (hated it) and in peds (which I liked but knew it wasn't for me). As soon as some spots opened in Labour and delivery I applied and started from there. That was 5 years ago now, and I'm still loving L & D.
