At Walmart I recently bought one of those pre-seasoned 12 " skillets made by Lodge in America, and I don't think it was all that expensive. I've read that you should avoid Chinese cast iron because they melt down damn near anything to make it, with the result being very poor quality metal. Guest guest
For my money, I'd check out eBay for cast iron skillets. The best ones to own are either Griswold or Erie. They are old and for that reason, I believe the quality of them is much higher than anything currently being made. For example, this Griswold http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem & item=3278106030 & category=976 is currently at $15.00 and a really good value/price. Sometimes you can get either brand for less than what you would pay for new in a department store. Here's another listing on eBay for 2 skillets currently at $15. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem & item=3278077763 & category=976 Griswold or Erie, that's all I use to cook with. I've got frying pans, a dutch oven, a long griddle. The first one I ever got was in the early 80s and it was free in a pile of things left over from someone's garage sale. Standard disclaimer **I have no auctions for cast iron skillets on eBay, though I am an eBay power seller. Not trolling for any products of my own.
