Hi

I've been peppering this group for answers to our struggles with our

14-year-old son over the last couple of days, and I want to thank everyone

for some great ideas. I'm discussing with dh and we're trying to figure out

how best to proceed.

However I'm a little confused over something. The psychiatrist suggested our

ds who has some Aspeger traits, is not ready for CBT and should try Prozac

for a bit to see if it makes him more open. I also spoke yesterday with a

psychologist affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto who

has a great reputation for successful CBT with kids. She's moving her office

near my home.

We'd much rather go the CBT route, rather than medicate, however,

medicating, and psychiatrists, are covered under our provincial health plan.

CBT and psychologists are not. This means we can give him Prozac and it

doesn't cost a thing. Or we can use this psychologist with the good rep,

(who says she'd prefer clients unmedicated) and go nearly bankrupt! She

told me today it will cost several hundred dollars for the initial

assessment (a couple of hours at $230 an hour) plus a 12-week treatment

course that will end up costing almost $4,000. Our insurance would only pay

$400 of that. And there is no guarantee it will work. My son has so far said

that CBT the psychiatrist offered didn't tell him he didn't already know -

he knows he has to fight the thoughts and compulsions, and how he should do

it - but can't.

I'm sure the likelihood of success is much higher with the expensive

psychologist who seems to have an excellent track record at Sick Kids

hospital. However, the cost of such a gamble is staggering. My son, when he

heard how much it would be, insisted he wouldn't do it, that he'd never want

us to spend that much money on it.

The other thing I " m struggling with: We're starting him on insotil. If the

inositol helps, or even if we went with Prozac and the Prozac helped,

wouldn't my son then say 'I'm fine now, don't need CBT'? I don't see how

alleviating the symptoms would make him more open to CBT.

Can anyone help clear these muddy waters for me?

Thanks again!

kim
