Guest guest
>Has anyone ever used latex gloves to handle the scoby? I'm sure people do but there's really no need to wear gloves. As long as you wash and rinse your hands thoroughly (and some people even rinse their hands in vinegar as a final step), there's no problem with handling the SCOBY with bare hands. Some of us believe that giving the culture the opportunity to interact with our DNA via direct touch is important. --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Guest guest
Hi, I did in the beginning, since I was making them for others purposely, still would consider it, but know some folks don't preffer latex. So I have the DEHP/DOP Gloves (safe for the envir), but well washed hands works, I just want to check on making sure of a better soap, as not to be having residue on my hands when not wearing gloves. Then, rinse your hands in vinegar. Then handle the SCOBY. The vinegar rinses away any detergent residue, sanitizes your hands, and the pH is better for the SCOBY than water. But, I don't dry my hands after I wash them, because handling the towel adds back microorganisms. So a final vinegar rinse, if you really want to be seriously ultra careful. But, plenty of people handle the SCOBYs with no trouble at all. --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Muste
Guest guest
Hm.... Maybe I'm being a weird one on this list but..... I'm sorry... After brewing KT for almost 3/4 of a year now and loving its benefits I still can't get myself to touch these strange looking and strange feeling things. I tried the gloves, but found out that the SCOBIES were much to slippery to get a grip on. Now I use stainless steel kitchen equipment to handle them. (like BBQ things, sorry, don't know what they are called in English...) I think I am being and thinking strange here... I don't want to handle the SCOBIES with my bare hand and still I do have this extra pot with spare SCOBIES I cut off pieces to use as skin treat... Anyway.....Have a happy 2007! I whish you all the best! 2007/1/1, Baker : > > > >Hi, I did in the beginning, since I was making them for others > >purposely, still would consider it, but know some folks don't preffer > >latex. Guest guest
Hi I would not worry about it. Each of us have different thing that bother us. The problem comes in when they control our lives not the other way around. It appears that you control yours by coming up with creative way to handle the SCOBIE. Keep enjoying the benefits of you Kombucha.
