Have you gotten any prenatal care? That's really important to find so that you

find out potential problems before hand...things like DM especially or even a

very small or very large for gestational age baby.

Before I was a nurse, I wanted to have my babies at home, but couldn't find a

midwife.

Another thing to consider...what are the laws in your state. If something bad

happens, will you go to jail?

There is no state in the union that tells you where you can give birth or

mandates you have a provider (MD/MW)

That's a myth.

I am a Licensed Midwife, Certified professional Midwife, and Labor & Delivery RN. I have personally attended over 500 woman at home over the past 14 years. Homebirth is a very safe option, I would refer you to this link: http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/330/7505/1416?ehom to check out the CPM statistics project results. The study was recently published in the British Journal of Medicine with incredible results. Midwives are now statrting to back up what we have always known with hard data!Good luck with your homebirth! "starjasmn@..." wrote: I had a home birth in 1996. Well, like I said I am a L & D nurse so I do know the importance of good prenatal care. I have had fantastic prenatal care. My visits with my midwife are far more in depth than any OB visit I have ever had. The prenatal care from my midwife is far superior. I am offered all the same testing and screening that is offered in an OB's office but she also covers things like diet, exercise and emotional well being. My visits are 1.5 -2 hours long instead of 15 minutes. I am given individualized care as opposed to feeling like just one cow in a very large herd getting the exact same care as every other woman/cow. I am well informed about the laws here and I am doing nothing illegal. Nor do I think I am endangering myself or my baby in any way. Like I said, I really feel like I am getting better care. The reason I posted originally was to hear

about the general consensus out there. I am not going to try to convince anyone to do this. But it is nice that all women have a choice. I had a hospital delivery the first time with everything and all the interventions. This time I want something different. What state do you live in that you couldn't find a midwife? I guess I wrongly assumed that all women had the option of seeing a midwife. Did you end up having a birth that was satisfying anyway? Another post mentioned the study about the safety of home births. It is an incredible study that I really wish all OB's would acquaint themselves with. When I mentioned to my OB that I wanted a home birth she cut me off with a comment about how dangerous that would be. So we never discussed that again. Thanks for everyones responses.mahjafo@... wrote: Have you gotten any prenatal care? I think home births can be very safe.....you just have to trust your midwife and feel sure she knows when to admit when she can't continue to care for you safely. I have seen some very good midwives and some incompetent ones....... Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
