Guest guest
OMG, what an adventurous soul you are. Yerba Mate is the foulest tasting tea I have ever encountered and would not in a million years ever try to use it in my KT LOL. I have to totally sweeten that tea and add cinnamon and cloves to it to be able to get it down. I love horehound and feverfew, but yerba mate ? YUK On the other hand I doubt if it would do anything terrible to the scoby- it is tea after all and does contain a bit of caffeine and it IS very healthy for us ( which is the ONLY reason I mess with it at all.) Guest guest
What kind of Yerba Mate are you drinking?! I love the stuff! I import it from Argentina and Brazil. Make empty the first cup you brew and put in more hot water, the same leaves can make several cups. And no, it's not actually tea so I'd mix some real tea in there. --ph > > yes Zoe, you are right it is foul but really good for you. I was kinda > hoping that the scoby would make it taste better. Guest guest
Hi Zoe Maybe you need to try a different brand of Yerba Mate. I enjoy it plain and do not find it foul tasting at all. But each individual can get a different flavor from a teasan. Could be you body chemistry does not mesh with Yerba Mate. I'm not sure I enjoy Pu-erh tea but do have a KT fermenting to see what happen when the SCOBY does its magic. Bill At 05:54 PM 12/22/2006 Friday, you wrote: >OMG, what an adventurous soul you are. Guest guest
Sorry, but i would never say Yerba Mate is foul,it is just not to everybody's taste, just like some teas aren't, either.I belong to a yerba mate growing family here in Argentina. Some relatives have a plantation in the north, yet I never drink it, as it produces acid reflux in me.I was sort of shocked to find my country's national drink called foul. Yerba Mate is the poor man's tea here, many underpriviliged people go through the day with yerba mate (with or without sugar, according to taste) and little food. And the ordinary Argentinians, not only the underpriviliged ones, consume quite a lot of yerba mate to get them through a working day. YM has a lot of health giving properties, one of them being it's good for the gut. I am half British half Argentinian, and I love tea (camellia sinensis) but can't drink yerba mate. To get back to KT, I'd never brew with it as it doesn't agree with me, but I believe the Yerba's health giving properties may add to KT's benefits. Two parts camellia sinensis, one part yerba mate. It will not harm the scoby. Good luck to anybody trying to brew with Yerba Mate, just make sure it agrees with you. Terry Re: Yerba Mate OMG, what an adventurous soul you are. Guest guest
I LOVE Yerba Mate! I fix my gourd in the morning, then make a thermos pitcher full of hot water and honey, and sip on my Bombilla all day. I get about 20 refills per gourd-full. I love how it makes me feel: up and full of energy, but full-bodied and calm, not at all like coffee jitters. With my morning cuppa (Irish Breakfast with organic whole milk), Hemp protein-flax-strawberry-banana-blueberry- yogurt smoothie, Couple of glasses of KT, glass of orange juice with sparkling water and psyllium husks, two quarts or so of water, and my occasional evening beer/wine/cocktail, Mate is one of my favorite beverages. I love to drink!!! Thirstily, Beth > Sorry, but i would never say Yerba Mate is foul,it is just not to > everybody's taste, just like some teas aren't, either.I belong to a > yerba mate growing family here in Argentina. Guest guest
Taken from The Happy Herbalist site; Yerba Mate Naturally Occurring Nutrients and Antioxidants! a few folks brew their kombucha exclusively using Yerba Tate. We recommend brewing with at least 25% real tea The average infusion of mate contains Vitamins: A, C, E, B1, B2, Niacin (B3), B5, B Complex Minerals: Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus Additional Compounds: Fatty Acids, Chlorophyll, Flavonols, Polyphenols, Trace Minerals, Antioxidants, Pantothenic Acid and 15 Amino Acids. According to Dr. Mowry, Director of Mountainwest Institute of Herbal Sciences, one group of investigators from the Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society concluded that Yerba Mate contains " practically all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life. " They focused especially on Pantothenic Acid, remarking that it is " rare to find a plant with so much of this significant and vital nutrient. It is indeed difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value. " Suggested usage Simply measure a half ounce portion and splash with cool water to help preserve nutrients, then steep in hot (but not boiling) water for 3-4 minutes. Some folks add honey or a splash of lemon In coffee-makers use 4 tbsp per 12 cup pot. For kombucha brewing many folks use straight Mate (instead of tea) We recommend to add 25-50% mate to regular tea (Camellia Sinensis) and seep to desired strength. The combination helps maintain the kombucha strain. Taken from another site; There are other viable methods of drinking Yerba Mate, and three of the most popular alternative methods are Yerba Mate with juice (Terere), convenient Yerba Cups, Yerba Mate espresso, and the shortcut Mate Cocido. All of these alternative methods have both benefits and disadvantages, yet none compare to the nutritional and health benefits of the Traditional Method. Hi adventurous soul, I have not tried either drinks as yet, but hope to. Audrey <snippet>> > Has anyone used Yerba Mate tea to make their KT.
