The first cup is always bitter, let it steep for five or ten and pour it out

and add more hot water. Make sure you're not using too much too.

Hi Zoe, thanks for replying. As you say, it' s funny that Yerba Mate produces

acid reflux in me, but I really can't take it as other Argentinians do. I can

drink it brewed as an ordinary tea with some milk in it,but I don't quite like

it like that. Question of taste. Last week I bought some Lapsang Souchong by

mistake, I wanted to get oolong. Now I'm trying to find somebody who to give the

LS to, as it's a bit too smoky-tasting for me. Maybe I can mix it with some

other tea and not have to throw it away if I find no takers.

Many of my friends drink yerba mate with no acid reflux problems, evidently I'm

the odd woman out here. People react in different ways to different foods, a

student of mine, ( I teach English here) can't eat or drink anything with

ginger, he ate a ginger biscuit and had a very bad allergic reaction, in fact,

he spent some hours in hospital.

The best of luck with your brewing,

Hugs,

Terry

Re: Yerba Mate

OMG, what an adventurous soul you are. Yerba Mate is the foulest tasting tea I

have ever encountered and would not in a million years ever try to use it in my

KT LOL. I have to totally sweeten that tea and add cinnamon and cloves to it to

be able to get it down. I love horehound and feverfew, but yerba mate ? YUK

On the other hand I doubt if it would do anything terrible to the scoby- it is

tea after all and does contain a bit of caffeine and it IS very healthy for us (

which is the ONLY reason I mess with it at all.)

Has anyone used Yerba Mate tea to make their KT. I would probably try

2 parts green tea to 1 part yerba mate. Its not the greatest tasting

tea, but I've gotten used to it. Its very healthy for you so I figure

I' ll give it a try if I get the OK from you guys.

Also do I have to use a special kind of test strip to check my KT?

Merry Christmas and Happy new Year, nne
