Guest guest
Hi, Maureen! I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. I know how it can just drain you. Are you going to a pain clinic or to a specialist who does chronic pain management? Nerve blocks (injections) and other kinds of treatment should at least lessen the pain. They may also prescribe different kinds of medication as part of your pain management program. What are you doing currently? Just my 2 cents! Lois in PA Back Fusion Hello, Can anyone help me with my pain. I had a fusion of L4/5, L5/S1, in 1995 Bone from the bone bank was used to replace my disc(s) . Rods and screws were used. I had the hardware removed in 1998. My pain is so great, I have stabbing pains constantly. The whole incision area is very tender. I am only getting worse. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?? Injections?? What can I do?? Thank you for all of your help. Maureen Know someone who could profit from our list? Guest guest
And here I was feeling sorry for myself. All I have is a broad-based unstable herniated disk in L-5-S1. Constant pain, narcotics don't help. But that's still relatively minor. I had the epidural block done, though I didn't know at the time that that's what it was. It didn't help, though I was glad that a doctor was finally doing SOMETHING. I'mgoing for another in a week and a half, which will also probably not help, but somepeople say the second or third one helps. I'llprobably go for a laminectomy beforelong. I also have arthritis in my hips and spine, but I don't much care about that at the moment. If it doesn't hurt all the time .... I do get some relief from lifting weights. Not to worry,I'm a nurse and my physical therapists approve. > Hi, Maureen! > > I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. I know how it can just drain > you. Guest guest
Hi Maureen, Your level of pain appears constantly very high, and I am glad you could marshal the presence of mind to send it to the list. There are two methods of treating pain at your level that are frequently used now. One is narcotic patches which you wear under your arm and give a sort of even sustained release over about a week. More advanced doctors will add more than one patch at a time if this is needed for effective pain relief. Since this method bypasses the digestive system, it takes a lower dose than administration of meds by mouth to give greater relief. If that works, we will all share a sigh of relief. However, if patches are not sufficient, It would be logical for your doctors to consider implanting a morphine pump that delivers controlled amounts of morphine to affected areas directly. from what you say about having the hardware removed, it makes me think that your doctors are expecting some improvement over time as your muscles take more strain off your back. This calls for physical therapy. At the extreme, with none of the above working, you would need to be considered a candidate for methadone, which can be administered orally in greater dosages than the other opioids. Please do not let unfounded concerns over addiction enter into your treatment. It is not reasonable in extreme chronic pain. You could build up tolerance (periodically need a dosage increase) but this is ordinary although it doesn't happen to everyone, and is not the same as addiction. While we're on the subject of extreme pain, it is usual for this to completely disrupt your life. Please keep in mind that it is a recognized medical & pharmacological principal that you should not have to suffer unnecessary pain & suffering; no matter what anyone says. Guest guest
Hello Diane, My problem is right above the tailbone. It all started from a car accident in January 1991. In April 1991 I had my first surgery for a bulging disc. The disc was so bad, he cleaned it out best he could and explored the disc above and disc below. I had a anterior and posterior fusion done in 1995. Cost about $80,000.00 My stomach was opened from my naval down and the disc(s) L4/5, L5/S1 were pulled out through my stomach, then I was flipped over and opened up 10 inches and 2 disc from the bone bank were inserted with rods and screws. In 1998 I had all the hardware removed because I could no longer walk. I can now walk, Thank you God, but I still have all the pain. Another area I have pain is in the PSIS, area, that is where my hip bones come around and meet up with my spine on both sides. The pain is awful, can't sit , stand , lay down ,,too long. The pain from the PSIS, is new since the hardware was removed. Dr. told me on Monday nothing could be done for the stabbing I feel in the incision area in the back, or the pain in my legs. X-rays looked fine on Monday. The doc said my problem is I am too thin. I have no padding to protect my back area. If I was to gain weight maybe, that would help. Only problem is pain leaves me with no appetite, I am 5'7 and weigh 130 I swim, walk,(as much as I can and always around somewhere to sit down) But this is the pits. I do not feel comfortable telling you to have the surgery or not, I know in my case it was I had to do something or I wanted to die. Do NOT smoke, that is the worse thing you could do to your back. For me , I feel like I had to have the surgery but I am a long way from being pain free. If you have any more questions please ask them. I have found that Vioxx worked well for me. I was allowed to take 2 tablets a day, only problem was it wore off in less than 2 hours after each pill. I am now trying Zanaflex, but I immediately fall asleep so I have to be very careful when I take it. I had tried all of the , Ansaid drugs, I have tried almost everythng at least once. Let me know how you are doing Maureen Angeldrmer7@... wrote: > Maureen, > Your email concerned me, as I too have a problem in the c-5-6 vertabre, a > ruptured disc, and have been told I need surgery. Guest guest
Hi Lois in PA., Thanks for the note. I sure wish there was something to be done. I have already had 8 injections before the 3rd surgery, they said no more for me. Gosh, I just got rid of my mooned face. It is just awful. I just need to maybe check into acupuncture,,, something to think about anyway Maureen LADenier wrote: > Hi, Maureen! > > I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. Guest guest
Thanks Ken for all of the info. I need to start somewhere so I will ask about the patches. I tried physical therapy in 1991, swore I would never do that again, I must of had a really poor therapist, I left his office crying every visit. I am soaking in hot tubs & whirl pools but I do not want anyone to touch my back. It hurts to even have a wet towel from swimming around my lower back, so you can tell it is very tender. Thanks for all of your help. I will keep in touch Maureen Turbin wrote: > Hi Maureen, > > Your level of pain appears constantly very high, and I am glad you > could marshal the presence of mind to send it to the list. Guest guest
Hello , Hope it all works out for you. Lifting weights, that is an idea, will have to start slow and work up. Guest guest
Hello , Hope it all works out for you. Lifting weights, that is an idea, will have to start slow and work up. Guest guest
Maureen, I too have had a fusion of the same area. Mine was done many, many years ago and I have since had a few more spinal surgeries for other ruptures and basically trying to clean up a botched job. I have only found relief by going to a pain clinic. That was the only place where I was treated for constant pain with the proper medications and therapies. It took me many years to finally get to this clinic. Other doctors just kept giving me more drugs that didn't work and no one was willing to try different therapies. I'm very grateful. One of the treatments I do have is an epidural block. These have been helpful at times, but other times they have not worked because of the amount of scar tissue I have. I hope this will give you another alternative. Kathleen in California

Guest guest
Hello Kathleen in California, Thanks for your post. Tomorrow(WED) I am having another MRI done, lets just pray it shows something. After my visit last Monday to my doctor, I was down for most of last week. I did make it to the YMCA to soak in whirlpool tub. That is about the only thing that seems to help me. I am so afraid of pain clinics. I know without a doubt, a physical therapists I was seeing, hurt me more than he helped me. That was 9 years ago, now I just excerise my self and as you can tell , something is not working, hope the MRI shows something. Thanks for you time. Guest guest
Jacuzzis are good. Kathleen is offering sound advice about a pain center. Hopefully you may find one that treats you completely, rather than for 1 problem at a time. Exercising within your own boundaries is also excellent. Actually, seems like you have good instincts about what you need. Maybe your docs know of a decent chronic pain treatment program. Fortunately I had one available. Although I got a great deal of appropriate medical help, it was group therapy there that I valued most.
