Vitamin A for chronic viral issues - Q

I have a protocol that Dr. Thom recommends for viral infections, starting with

500K IUs of vitamin A x 2 days, then halving the dose every 3 days until you get

to 60K/day, at which point you continue dosing until the bottle of vitamin A is

done. Is this for acute or chronic viral infections? (Obviously, contraindicated

in pregnant women or those trying to become pregnant.)
