" I'm afraid that I cannot agree with what you wrote because every fat person

I know swears that he/she does not eat sugar, does not eat white flour, does

not

fail to drink water, and does do his/her 3 miles walking per day. " While that

is

obviously not true, some of it may well be. Because I see these same people

in the health food stores, buying what I consider correct foods and other

good stuff, they are still ill and overweight.

And again I say that there is something wrong with all the diets with all

that

heavily advertised " improved and enriched " foods that are being sold in all

those fascinating and brilliantly colored boxes. And the " whole grains " in

the

cereals seem to be mostly of stuff that I, for one, don't know what it is and

wouldn't eat it even if I did. Certain bread brands, for instance, loudly

scream

that they have " added 12 vitamins to enrich this bread. " Unfortunately for

us, first, to increase the shelf life, they took out a massive array of other

vitamins and minerals, most of which we don't have the knowledge to find

yet. And then they are allowed to call this junk food " Improved " , legally.

Have you gone into a grocery store and looked at plain old tortillas? Many

years ago one of my brothers married a lovely Mexican girl, and she taught

us all how to make tortillas. Flour, salt, lard and water. That's all.

Now go to a store and read the labels. It is a small chemical factory, and

it is one thing that lots of our immigrant workers use as bread, each day.

I strongly suspect that the plain old lard is much better for us than most

of the stuff they are now telling us is best for our health. Such as the

time we were told butter was bad, but margarine was the only thing

that was good for us. But years later, guess what? Margarine is BAD

for us, and a little butter may not be so bad after all.

All that good stuff is what the Feds SAY, but to put it into action, like in

schools, then that is a totally different, far too expensive an action that

no one will go for. They eat a " good " diet in school, and our kids are

getting

fatter and fatter each year, as are their parents.

I've volunteered in a hospital for about 27 years, and in that time couldn't

see anyone who ate a decent diet. And the incidence of fat nurses and

doctors is also growing. (no pun intended) These are highly intelligent,

highly educated people, and should know how to eat. Just look around

you at the ones who MAKE these rules. They change every year or so,

and I don't agree with any of them. I think that they are made up

according to what large manufacturer's have to sell, that is what they

advise people to eat.

Again I say, go to a mall, any mall in the world, and look at the people

there.

Pat, I couldn't agree with you more!

It's the same story here in Europe!

Home-made, relatively cheap probiotic foods like Kombucha and Kefir

are uncomfortable to people that promote all that glitzy hyper-chemicalised

stuff with false promises of super-slim eternal life ;-)

Ha, I like a passionate woman :-) That's why I have bottom-posted below

what you said.

Don't forget to look deep into the Kombucha glass today ;-)

Its not just the sugar, but that is a BIG part of the problem.

THE SAD (Stupid American Diet) is so nutrient poor- that we ALL tend to

OVEREAT period.

It was not until I went organic that I was able to break this cycle, and Kefir,

Kombucha have

caused a disinterest in sugary foods. I am no longer HUNGRY, Small amounts

leave me totally

satisfied with high energy levels and a sense of well being. Yes the weight is

dropping off, thankfully, and

this time it will stay off, because Im not depriving myself of anything. I eat

anything I want- I just don't

want as much any more.

I don't think I'm hostile, precisely, but after a whole lot of

years in a hospital, where volunteers are simply considered

part of the scenery, I, and my friends, have overheard a lot

of conversations that proved how the medical folks have to

toe the line that they don't always believe in. What they do

for their own health is often something else.

I think I owe my life to that hospital..one year they were having

almost free mammograms for hospital personnel.

We were considered non-salaried personnel, so my charge nurse

urged me to get one, and the next day my doctor called me in,

and referred me to a surgeon. Seven years later there is no more

cancer showing, although each morning I stuff one side of my

bra with my bosom buddy, and then go do whatever has to be

done. I don't obsess about it, there are a whole lot of others

working in that same hospital, some with both removed.

They also go on with their lives. There's lots of other interesting

things to do, others to help, folks to write to on these fasinating

forums.

You can't blame the feds necessarily, there isn't a big conspiracy

theory here unfortunately. The US government is one of the biggest

corporations in the world with a very large science department that

for all of it's intelligent hard working scientists, the rules they

(the scientists) restrict themselves to means it will take them many

many years before they realize alot of the most basic facts about the

human body. The funny thing about these rules is they are what have

brought us to the society we have today; ie, we have the internet

where we can discuss kombucha, and general health, kitchen appliances

to make food preperation easier, etc.... They've been the basis of

science for thousands of years.

That scientists are so willing to change their stances every year is

actually a good thing. If they stuck steadfast to something that

their research told them was unhealthy, we'd be in alot more trouble

than we are today. They are at least willing to admit they might not

know everything, and will keep trying to figure it out.

So what are we to do? Well, I'm not a scientist, so I just listen to

both sides. I'm sure many of the members of this message board have

been in a hospital or in a doctors office, and had to rely on the

scientists for their own health. But at the same time, we're all

still drinking kombucha, and following alternative medicine. There's

no sense for the hostility, but then there's no sense to listen to

what they say either. It's just the Feds and not [insert deity(s)/all

binding principle to the universe].

Yes Margret. It was kinda scary to see this in Bavaria when I was

there. They've developed a penchant for freezer food there that any

American could be proud of, and then alot of the traditional southern

German foods didn't seem to have the same nutritional value they had

100 years ago. I didn't see too many really skinny people there over

the age of 16.

(Although all the skinny people here, in NYC, seem like they are

anorexic, but that's a discussion for another time...)

Kombucha cheers,

Yaakov (still using your cultures, and they are doing very well in the US :) )

Ah, Yaakov, I agree with you. This is not only true for my native Bavaria,

but for all industrialised countries, I think.

It's too easy to buy STUFF from the shop without considering what's actually

in it. I have started reading food contents labels almost as a hobby.

Especially artificial sweeteners are BIG on my no-no list.

With Kombucha and Kefir I know just about what I'm consuming ...

at least no artificial sweeteners ;-)

Yes, here in ENgland too, you get these crass difference between the really

obese and the really thin ( obese . . . . . . ME. . . . . . . . . . thin)

I believe, that Kombucha can help either to get a better body weight and

quality of life, as it is such a valuable balancing food.

My 33- year- old daughter visited the US for a month for a cousin's wedding and

then went on to Canada. In the States, she was appalled by the number of

overweight people she saw, and the stuff they ate. As she couldn't stand the

fatty junk food, and she could not afford to go to expensive restaurants, she

came back to Argentina with four kilos less! However, she did not see so many

overweight people in Canada. I wonder why?

All the best,

Nonsense, that kind of diet isn't working, all you have to do is go

to any American Mall and sit people watching for a while. Or go to

a grocery store, and see the stuff the heavy folks have in their

carts. "

You are saying, that what I listed above, is what your 'heavy folks' are eating?

That is not what your Profs are saying out here! One does not say 'nonsense' or

'rubbish' in reply, in English polite society. One says " I'm afraid I cannot
