Guest guest
Hi Y'all, I am a lurker and don't have time (usually) to answer many posts. I have arthritis, FM, an un-named auto-immune disorder (still being studied) and CFS. This project got my interest, but I have a question. > At 04:28 PM 4/15/00 -0700, rstene wisely said: > >we also in Canada have a desert type inviroment in > >the interior of British Columbia and when I get within 1 hour of > arriving > >there I feel so much better, the arthritis and FM are much better in > the dry > >heat. > >Rosemarie > > > > Rosemarie, > > Could you tell a little more about that area of BC. I think dampness also gets to him, but I'm not sure. How could a low-pain world directory be put together that would be accessible to persons with different conditions, which need different environments? Just a thought. Bright Blessings, J. Guest guest
Hi , I'm sure we all realize that there is no " perfect place, " but environment can play a part in pain. In my case it has been more than I ever realized. Pooled knowledge is probably one way, and people who know meteorology would be another. For those who get a positive response to low humidity, warmth and low barometric pressure, Guadalajara is reportedly a good place. My dad lived there for several years. He did so more because of the favorable economy for Americans & large American community. But we are generally very provincial when it comes to relocating. Family, friendship & support system ties play a large role in influencing us, as probably does plain old familiarity. Economics and health care must also. It just happens that the cost of living for a disabled person and health care are good in Las Vegas as well as climate (for me). And people are generally congenial & helpful (this does not cover everybody). I tried, without much success, to search out equivalent places around the world I could find where I also might live. One problem is there is no way of really knowing until you try a place if it's for you. I very much had wanted to have some alternatives with more of an island atmosphere, but couldn't locate any options where the cost of living or availability of housing to foreigners is favorable. That's why the area mentioned in Canada piqued my interest. I have problems with climate in Florida & Puerto Rico. One place I considered was the Pacific Rim. However cost of living and sub-tropical rainy weather were negatives. But I am sure there are many other plausible places. These could make all the difference for someone living on limited means of disability income. Spain is favored by older Brits for retirement, as has been Florida here. Much of the Middle East is warm & dry. However, I believe there is a higher cost of living in Israel, and general medical care for people with special needs & limited income is not attractive. The medical care issue could also be a factor in Guadalajara, unless you know just what meds you need & are stable on them. Don't know if a global directory will ever surface, but I am very interested in alternative places, if just to visit & feel comfortable for a change of pace. I am a photographer, and always looking for places of interest as well. In fact, I am having a bit of a fight with myself right now over divergent interests that impact on where I may get tied down with commitments. I am also a counselor and getting re-certified here. It would seem that travel and wither counseling or photography (weddings are half the business) would be not too compatible. So I am planning some southwest day trips or several day trips so I can at least get to some fresh places as a change & do a little travel & nature photography too. If I take weddings, I get anchored. One would think the same for counseling, but I did have a dear friend & teacher who practiced 9 months in NY & 3 months in South Africa (his home) each year. The key to this was that he specialized in long-term psychoanalysis, and had old patients in SA who were glad to see him but no longer required intensive treatment. Also, he was a prodigious writer, and I suspect used that time for writing & socializing. There is another subtle point here for me. I have always believed that most people with problems could balance their lives, at least to some degree rather than feeling completely defeated & deprived. And using the advantages of geography could be one of the ingredients.
