Guest guest
Hi Bernie and Welcome to the list. I have Shetland Sheepdogs which help to keep my spirits up when the pain overcomes me. I know how wonderful our furkids can be for us. I have osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia among other things. I have had 5 surgeries on my spine and now there is no more that the surgeons can do for me so I will be getting a spinal morphine pump impant. I go to the pain specialist Dec.15 for an evaluation. Keep your fingers crossed that something can be done to relieve all of this pain. In the meantime if you would like to take a look at my dogs, you can see some of them here. The big white dog is my Kuvasz. == http://community.webtv.net/shastac http://community.webtv.net/jake4me/JAKE Bobbie shastac@... Guest guest
Bernie, It is disappointing not to be able to do what we used to do, huh? I used to run six miles, bike 500 miles in a week, etc. Those days are gone. I now swim every day for an hour and it's the only time I don't hurt. I try to just take one day at a time. Although I do make plans ahead sometimes, I always know that my participation will depend on my pain level. I 'm doing better emotionally now that I accept that I'm in pain, rather than fighting it all the time. I still have times of depression, but not as much. Oh, I use magnets -- they seem to help some, but I still experience pain. Sunny Bernadette wrote: Hello Everybody, It is time I introduced myself! My name is Bernadette, aka Bernie. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am the very happy and proud owner of a Golden Retriever Guide Dog, named Hazey (aka The Hazard!). My chronic pain is due to MS. It feels as if there is a burning iron placed on my spine from my neck, down to my tail bone. Sometimes, it seems to get hotter and hotter. My skin is not hot to the touch though. Sometimes the pain causes me to withdraw, or to behave like a savage thing. I try to keep myself occupied with just about anything, but then the exhaustion sets in and all I can do is feel sorry for myself. I have little patience with people who feel sorry for themselves, and even less with myself. The worst is when I make up my mind to do something and then cannot because the pain is unbearable. Like play my violin or study. The two things in life that mean so much to me. I take a lot of time off work because my legs are too sore to walk. That does not go down well and the people at work do not understand. They just think I am taking time off. Grrr! Tommorow, I am going to speak to somebody who knows how magnets work. Take care and thanks for listening.Bernie Know someone who could profit from our list? Guest guest
Bobbie, Very cute puppies. We have a four month old Shephard/Black Lab mix and she gets into EVERYTHING. She's a real sweet heart, though and we love her. One of my Analytic Institute teachers was from S. Af., & he used to practice about 8 months of the year in New York and then went back & saw patients he still has in South Africa, as well as friends. So far as other people's reactions, most people are focused on themselves or their own stuff. What happens to us is completely foreign to them, and both threatening & frightening. We all deny death & potential infirmity in order to go about our lives with great preoccupation. The burning in the spine also comes with a bunch of other conditions. I have it from arthritic deposits inside the spinal canal irrritating the spinal cord. It is now pretty well controlled with Effexor & Neurontin. But I do have days & periods that are totally lost because I simply have to lie around to minimize discomfort. One device that helps with that kind of pain in a fair amount of situations is called an Alpha Stim. I believe we have a " faq " on it in our files area you can access. I have one & use it mostly when things get really bad. Don't want to be bothered with it other times, although it would still minimize discomfort from the nerve problems. Do you have an MS Association where you are? there is a moderately active one in US, and it helps to have people close who can truly understand your situation.
