Does milk taste different from a cow that has

recently given birth? I

picked up 2 gallons yesterday from a cow that gave

birth last Sunday.

The milk smells fine but has a slightly off

taste. I really do trust

that the owner would know and not sell milk from

cow with mastitis or

otherwise sick.

I also feel kind of odd about calling the farm to

ask if someone here

has the answer.

What kind of off taste does it have? Sour? Dusty tasting? I would call them and let them know. Could just be a feed change.

As a provider, I would much rather have my customers call and ask what they may think is a stupid/weird/odd question than for them to sit and wonder or god forbid be unsatisfied with my product. In keeping an open door to my customers we have begun to bond in a way that is so cool. I am very upfront and honest with them all and will continue to be so. Most of us are more than happy to answer all of your questions and please do not think that you are bothering us.(my opinion)

Not after this length of time. But, there could be a tiny bit left. The best milk comes in after about 10 days. I usually tell people to wait that long for milk after my cow freshens.

If the milk is really, really yellow, then there might still be some colostrum in it. But, colostrum is sickly sweet, so I don't think that's what you are referring to, right?

I had thought about colostrum and the feed thing. We are still

having one snow storm after another here so there's no grass. I only

started raw milk last spring when the cows were already out in the

pasture.

Another thing I realzied today was that I have a bit of a cold and it

could be just that it tastes funny to me and doesn't really have a

funny taste.

Also... it hasn't been 10 days. So that could be it too? It will

just a week tomorrow so the milk I got may have been the first milk

after the colosturm. It's also has a lot less cream.

If I notice it again when I get more milk on Wed. I will ask at the

farm.

Allow me to brag a bit about Annelis - she is too humble!

Annelis does more than maintain open and honest communications; she

set up a Yahoo! message board for all her customers, and lets us

know when a cow calves, and what should we name her?; takes polls on

how we feel about paying extra for organic grain, gives advice about

homeopathics for wounded cats, keeps us up to date on the cow-share

legislation, and generally kids around with us.

We've had discussions about sour milk on that message board, and

never has she even hinted at being defensive or offended; rather she

bends over backwards to correct problems (even when they don't

originate at her farm!). She is building a fiercely loyal

following.

Her last post on our cow-share board told about how she invited her

state representative (and her granddaughter) over for a glass of raw

milk...:-) She said it went quite well.

We much rather hear direct from our consumers. The bond between a

family and a family cow is tight. We feel like our consumers are an

extension of our family
