We've always done our 4th at home, just as we did as kids (in the Dark

Ages, when there were no organized shows). Louie did a " wander in,

wander out " holiday when it came to fireworks. He liked sparklers (and

does still) and fountains that sent out pretty colors in showers. But

he's never been much for noisy fireworks......at least till he grew up

and moved out! Now he goes out on the deck at his house with his

roomies and they watch the fireworks in the city below (they're at

elevation in the foothills of the Sandias). And that's after a bbq

dinner. :) When Louie was young, we did go down to this neat place

called Tingley Beach here in Albuquerque, where there are ducks and

geese swimming (and begging for bits of hotdog bun). We'd take a picnic

lunch of cold chicken and potato salad, and then if we all felt like it,

we'd go to the city aquarium so Louie could watch the Fairy Jellyfish.

:) We've always felt that the 4th was a family day, mostly because my

dh and I were raised that way. So we just do family things.....and one

year, we drove about 6 blocks and watched the really big display at the

airforce base. :)

Hi TK,

We plan a quiet Fourth of July. We will go to the local park in the

morning and ride the steam train. they know my son there and will

let him " cut " to the front of the line. (It helps that my mom works

as a volunteer there). We will have a BBQ at home in the

afternoon. We are not allowed to use home/private fire works around

here (big fire risk) but there is a nice display put on at the high

school. We will walk to the hill at the end of our street where

there is a good view of the fire works, but not too crowded and not

too close to the noise. That will be it. Parades? Concerts?

Rodeos? Nope, not this kid. In past years we tried to force the

issue and ended up with a miserable kid and no fun for any of us.

Now we plan things around his needs. His NT sister complains a bit,

but we make sure we do other activities for her so she gets special

time too. Like we will take her to Disneyland for her birthday in

two weeks without her brother.

We go to this Chatea here. They let everyone come for free. Its the nicest crowd I have ever seen. The place we used to go was way too wild for kids etc..

The only thing my son does is cover his ears for the first few then he calms down. When he was younger we would ask him to guess the nexty colors etc..

The only thing that totally freaks my son out is popping balloons.

Noone would even know hes senstitive that way unless you saw it.

He FREAKS and almost cries if you have a balloon popping contest.

Also the movie ET seems to have something in the beggining that FREAKS him out. He did the same thing at Universal Studios ET ride? Yet he wants to watch other scarey movies like Jurassic park, Terminator....

Also do you remember those baby toys called See and Say? The old ones had a cord running out of them. He used to act like that toys was hu7man torture. I got rid of it right away back then.

Anyway he does pretty good with fireworks thank goodness.

TK what will you all do? Can your child handle the loud noise?

Asperger's may ultimately be a blessing, rather than a curse. ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- Michele E -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*

My daughter (14) can't handle the fireworks so we have very rarely gone to them. Sometimes she enjoys them from afar, and I do mean AFAR. She has a very difficult time with any crowd or event. We avoid them. We've learned. We tried again last week...some folks from church organized a group to go to the local baseball stadium for a fun game (no big league thing like the cubs; a minor league). She lasted an hour and 15 minutes and there was a lot of whining and 'let's go' in that time. It just doesn't work. She stopped going to church with us a year or more ago...can't deal with the crowd or the sitting for the sermon for 40 minutes. : (

When my son , now age 14, was smaller, he would SCREAM at fireworks. He hated the sounds. He hated fireengines and police car sirens as well at parades. We didnt know that he was AS then, but we were aware of some sensory issues.

is now much better about them. We had to spend some years in a car watching the fireworks out the car windows.

This year we will go down to our large river and watch them as usual on July 3, which is my husband's 41st birthday.

Happy 4th of July, those in America.

Hi, Michele!

I HATE THE SOUND OF BALLOONS POPPING!!! My son loves doing that, but

I can't STAND it! My son got into the balloon popping, BECAUSE (I'm

an idiot and...) I thought he'd be better with handling loud abrupt

noises if he learned to pop them himself. It's like a thrill ride

for him now!!! YEA.

I agree with your son completely. See and Says are torture devices!

That horrible scratchy sound they make.... bleurgh! I hate the

turkey sound the worst.

Louie used to laugh like a maniac at his The Farmer Says See N Say toy!

Especially at the turkey and the cow. :) But it seems he finds a lot

of sounds and sound combinations funny. Like, the last 5 notes in the

M*A*S*H theme song, the " fall over the ottoman " notes in the Dick Van

Dyke show theme, and the way Ramone sings the phrase " blitzkreig

bop " in the song of the same name (he cuts it very short so it seems to

pop). :)
